NFL analyst Skip Bayless jokingly accused Taylor Swift after her wedding coincided with Argentina's FIFA World Cup match against Cape Verde, claiming guests missed Lionel Messi's memorable performance because phones were restricted during the ceremony.

“How dare Taylor Swift make her guests miss this Messi-Cape Verde knockout match. They aren't even allowed to keep tabs on their phones! She should've postponed,” the veteran sports commentator posted on X. 

Swift’s wedding with the Kansas City Chiefs’ TE Travis Kelce took place in New York City at Madison Square Garden. The wedding was kept under wraps by the couple, who wanted privacy for their special day. One way to achieve this was restrictions on using phone during the ceremony. 

As phones were reportedly restricted during the ceremony, guests were unable to follow the Argentina-Cape Verde match in real time. Those who wanted to watch the game but couldn’t, they missed a thrilling round 32 clash.

The island country’s dream run at the FIFA World Cup came to an end when they fell 3-2 in an extra-time game against Lionel Messi & Co. He sent an extra 30 in the game, and Cape Verde’s star goalkeeper Vozinha made eight saves, according to Charlotte Coates and Elizabeth Conway, BBC Sports Journalists.

With this face-off between the formidable Argentina and debutant Cape Verde, who had a meteoric run, Messi’s campaign for a third World Cup final remains strong.

While Bayless joked that Swift's wedding made guests choose between the two events, both occasions ultimately unfolded on the same day.

According to reports, a crowd of over 64,478 was in attendance at the Miami stadium for the game. Meanwhile, Swift and Kelce were accompanied by close friends and family for their special day.

The star singer and footballer held a lavish but private wedding ceremony. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got married in New York City. After the couple was announced husband and wife,  jumbotrons outside displayed “JUST&T MARRIED!” according to Ali Bauman of CBS News.

Moreover, the Empire State Building lit up in the color blue after they tied the knot on July 3, 2026.

According to the building’s official website, the “light blue sparkle color” was in the spirit of the “Celebration of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Wedding at Madison Square Garden.”

“Her something blue (blue heart),” the post said alongside a video of the building being illuminated by light blue lights.

While Bayless joked about the scheduling conflict, New York celebrated the couple's wedding in style, marking one of the biggest celebrity events of the year.
