“Never Win Another SB”: NFL Fans Divided Over Sean Payton’s Broncos Extension

Head coach Sean Payton is here to stay. The Denver Broncos have added five years to his contract by scratching his old one. In an X post, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the deal between them.

“Sean Payton had two years remaining on his previous deal and, in its place, he gets a new five-year deal,” he shared on June 11.

The franchise announced this development some time after Schefter’s post.

“We’re thrilled for Sean to continue leading our team as head coach,” franchise owner and and CEO Greg Penner said.

Payton, 62, joined the Broncos in 2023 after spending 15 seasons coaching the New Orleans Saints from 2006 to 2021. He has 37 years worth of experience divided into pro league and college football.

Payton, was a coaching assistant for San Deigo State University, Indiana State University, and Miami State Univeristy. He had two stints with San Diego, first in 1988-89 and then in 1992-93. He then transitioned into the NFL.

“Sean Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture with high expectations,” Penner said. “I appreciate the close partnership he shares with George Paton along with the alignment and stability across our football operations.”

His 194-118, with a .622 winning percentage, make for the 12th most NFL wins. He has 10 playoff victories and four conference title appearances. Payton has 184 regular-season wins.

Yet, in his career spanning decades, Payton has only one Super Bowl title to his name. This fact has spilt Broncos fans who hold opposing views on his extension.

Denver Broncos Fans Express Their Views On HC Sean Payton

Under Adam Schefter’s X post announcing the development in the Denver Broncos, fans took to the comments section to share their take on the Sean Payton.

One fan was firmly against the move and gave credit of Payton’s Super Bowl success to another.

“He’ll never win another SB. He only did it once with DREW BREES!! Come on. He’s too c**** and over thinks everything,” they wrote.

Others believed Payton earned it.

“Well deserved. I hope his tenure with the broncos ends better than the saints,” one wrote.

He stepped down after a long run with the New Orlean Saints and took a year-long hiatus before joining the Broncos.

“Broncos ownership is all in on Payton. Going from two years left to a full new five year deal shows they really believe in what he's building there. Smart move if the wins keep coming,” one assessed.

The Broncos have consistently performed well under him and 8, 10 and 14 games in the past three years, respectively.

These stats show improvement, and one fan mused that Payton is paid without winning a major title.

“Broncos gave Sean Payton a 5-year extension after 8→10→14 wins. Bro went from “we s***” to “we’re kinda mid” and got paid like he won the Super Bowl. NFL coaches really living the dream life.”

However, one replied that this might meet a poor end if quarterback Bo Nix doesn’t improve.

“He’s going to eventually be a scapegoat and get fired when Bo Nix keeps stinking it up on the field.”

The Broncos are on an upward curve, but will they reach new heights with Payton? What are your thoughts?
