NCAA Makes Final Call on Brendan Sorsby Eligibility for 2026

The NCAA denied Brendan Sorsby’s plea for reinstatement for eligibility for the 2026 season. The college sports’ governing body found him ineligible after details of his g******* history came to light.

Reportedly, Sorsby placed over thousands of b***, including his own team during his college days, violating NCAA student-athlete rules. The NCAA’s rules call for a permanent ban for athletes if they b** on their own games.

“Recently, the NCAA issued an initial ruling that Brendan is permanently ineligible to compete,” said Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec. “Texas Tech will be appealing that decision. We believe that given the facts and the context of Brendan’s case, the NCAA’s ruling should be reversed or modified.”

Per Tim Bielik of cleveland.com, Sorsby is set to appear at the Lubbock County Court on June 1. The quarterback is seeking an injunction to overturn the NCAA's decision and allow him to play college football in 2026.

Based on the court’s decision, Sorsby can then apply for the NFL’s supplemental draft. June 22 is the deadline to apply for the draft, which will be held in July.

The Texas Tech quarterback’s request was filed after he entered a rehabilitation program last month to overcome his addiction. Meanwhile, the Texas Tech President has taken a firm stance on pleading for Sorsby’s case to get him back.

“The NCAA’s stated mission includes ‘fostering (student athletes’) lifelong wellbeing’ and they have claimed their goal is to promote ‘a culture of care’ for student athletes’ mental health. G******* addiction is a clinically recognized behavioral disorder as defined in the DSM-5,” wrote Schovanec in a letter.

Sorsby took to social media on Tuesday to say he completed his 35-day rehab at the Algamus G******* Recovery Center in Goodyear, Arizona, last Friday.

“With the support of my coaches, teammates and the university, I’m looking forward to returning to campus in Lubbock. If I'm blessed and fortunate enough to have the opportunity to continue my college career at Texas Tech, I know I will get the support I need,” wrote Sorsby in his statement.

He also expressed his remorse and dedication to proving that he deserves another chance in the statement.

"I am deeply sorry to everyone I’ve disappointed and am committed to the hard and necessary work ahead," he added.

With Sorsby’s career prospects up in the air, Texas Tech is holding on to the hope of him returning to his home turf. In fact, the Texas Tech president is making sure that the 22-year-old knows that he’s got his back.

Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec Extends Support to Brendan Sorsby

According to Andrew Peters of the Bleacher Report, Schovanec confirmed that Sorsby will return to campus this week, having completed his intensive inpatient treatment program.

Schovanec further added that Sorsby will continue outpatient clinical care and participate in group and individual therapy.

The university will monitor his technological devices, install software to block b****** sites, and assign a custodian to oversee his finances.

Sorsby will also receive treatment for his anxiety disorders under the Texas Tech President’s care and will have periodic compliance checks.

Schovanec concluded his letter stating that their foremost priority in contemplating Brendan’s future with Texas Tech is his continued health and well-being.
