Myles Garrett's Union With Jerry Jones Shut Down With Major Insight From Adam Schefter
In 2017, before the NFL draft, star defensive end Myles Garrett had requested that Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, trade for him. The Cleveland Browns landed him eventually and shut down any recent trade rumors.
In an X post on Thursday, ESPN Cleveland shared a clip of NFL expert Adam Schefter’s latest appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. Schefter addressed Garrett’s restructured contract and stated that the Browns are not trading Garrett at any cost.
“I called the Browns, and they said they’re 100% not trading Myles Garrett. They were adamant about it,” he said.
Garrett’s new contract has become a point of discussion in the NFL community. His roster bonus took a hit and has been pushed back from its initial dates. Apart from that, Garrett has moved $8 million of his base salary into the roster bonus in the revised contract.
A development that will lower future cap ends, ultimately benefiting the Browns. Which is why many experts believe that this contract is “actually tradable.”
This is where hopes of seeing the 30-year-old in Dallas colors shot up. After all, Garrett is a Texas native, had pled Jones earlier, and the Cowboys failed to acquire Maxx Crosby even after making three offers to the Las Vegas Raiders.
But the Browns are not letting go of the NFL record holder at all. In March 2025, the franchise and Garrett agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $160 million. And the management added a no-trade clause in their terms.
The Browns Were Restless With Garrett’s Trade Request
The management had to act fast after Garrett requested a trade in an open letter he wrote in the 2025 preseason. Even after eight seasons in the NFL, his “ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl” remained unfulfilled, and he does not see it happening with the Browns.
General manager Andrew Berry said that he has “no interest” in indulging Garrett’s request. And the edge rusher stayed for his career-best season yet. Garrett set the NFL record for most sacks by a player in a season with 23, with 43 tackles for loss. He won his second Defensive Player of the Year award and had his jersey inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Garrett leads the best defense in the league. Last season, they were No.1 overall, better than the Seattle Seahawks, a defensive powerhouse, and the 2025 Super Bowl champions. Meanwhile, the Browns went 5-12 because of the offense.
With their latest move, the Browns have certainly retained Garrett. But they must become a winning team and give him what he really wants: a championship.
