Myles Garrett's Major Achievement Gets Him Into the Hall of Fame Ahead of Bill Belichick
In an utterly disappointing season for the team, Myles Garrett provided some redemption.
On Wednesday, Myles Garrett’s '95' jersey and helmet were put on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Garrett made 23 sacks and surpassed the NFL record for most sacks by a player in a season. His year-long chase came to a thrilling conclusion in the fourth quarter of the Week 18 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
With only five minutes left in the game, the 29-year-old got rushed past the Bengals’ tackle Orlando Brown Jr. to sack quarterback Joe Burrow. With this feat, Garrett is now a part of the elite Browns cohort who have been immortalized thanks to their achievements.
Quarterback Brian Hoyer and receiver Travis Benjamin were featured in 2014. Later, Nick Chubb and Baker Mayfield joined in 2018. Thanks to Mayfield’s explosive debut, his jersey was put up immediately, and Chubb’s followed soon in Week 10. The last Browns player to be featured was offensive lineman Joe Thomas, who dedicated his entire career to the franchise.
However, a big part of why Garrett's moment is taking the spotlight is because he got in before the former New England Patriots' coach, Bill Belichick. Even with just a display rather than a formal induction, Belichick's exclusion still stung.
He turned the New England Patriots into a dynasty with six Super Bowl Championships. Yet, he was not voted into the 2026 class. Ever since the institution made the announcement, many have voiced their disappointment over this “snub,” including Tom Brady.
Why Did Bill Belichick Not Get Inducted?
According to rumors, some voters took into account the controversies in which coach Belichick was involved in, like Spygate and Deflategate.
The outrage on social media about Belichick's exclusion was swift, as major athletes spoke up. Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs' QB, said, "Insane… don’t even understand how this could be possible."
Even Deion Sanders chimed in, saying, "The Disrespect to Coach Belichick is straight out IGNORANT! He’s arguably the BEST NFL COACH TO EVER COACH THE GAME! How quickly we forget the impact Coach Belichick made on all of us!@nfl WOW!"
And while fans didn't debate Garrett's inclusion, it still came as a shock. Now, the defensive star is up for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Do you think he'll win?
