Myles Garrett Trade Off the Table As Browns Delay Sack King's Bonus Pay

Myles Garrett isn't going anywhere. As per league sources, the Cleveland Browns have some modifications to the contract. The new deal changes how Garrett gets paid and solidifies his future in Cleveland.

Sources reported that the Browns officially restructured the deal on Tuesday. However, this wasn't a change in salary.

"The Browns and Myles Garrett have agreed to contract modifications that give them cap flexibility, but they have no plans to trade him," league sources told Cleveland.com.

In his earlier contract, Myles Garrett's 2026, 2027, and 2028 option bonuses had to be exercised by the 15th day of the league.

However, the Browns have modified the payment of the option bonuses to benefit Garrett. The management has moved $8 million of his 2029 and 2030 base salary into roster bonuses early in each league year. And these changes are followed up by Garrett’s March 2025 contract extension.

He signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension, which runs through 2030. And this extension came with a no-trade clause, which Garrett agreed to.

While the changes create cap space, they also resolved the tension between the star pass-rusher and the front office.

The Browns cannot afford to lose Myles Garrett

In a preseason open letter addressed to his franchise and fans last year, the 30-year-old had asked for a trade after spending seven seasons with the Browns. He cited his “desire to win and compete on the biggest stages” and “the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl” to make this difficult decision.

The Browns ended their 2025 season with a 5-12 record, with the offense ranked 30th overall. But their defense was the best in the league. Even better than the Seattle Seahawks, the Super Bowl champions.

This was bound to happen as Garrett made a thrilling chase to surpass and set an NFL sack record. Last season, he made 23 sacks, the most by a player in a season, and rose above Hall of Famer Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt.

So far, the two-time Defensive Player of the Year has played 134 games, recorded 412 tackles, and 125.5 sacks. The Browns have ruled out trade with their recent moves, but now the offense has to elevate itself if they want to keep Garrett’s spirits and performance up.
