Myles Garrett Finds Consolation in Utter Defeat as Browns Star Just a Sack Away from History
Can Myles Garrett actually close in on the NFL single-season sacks record? After Sunday’s match against the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns’ defensive end has executed 21.5 sacks this season. This mark is not just Garrett's season high but holds deeper significance.
The Browns' loss 31-3 to the Bears is nothing short of humiliation. But there is a silver lining. If Garrett makes two more sacks, he will surpass the NFL record for most sacks by a player in a season.
Currently, the said record is 22.5 sacks, and was first set by Hall of Famer Michael Strahan in 2001. It was matched by Pittsburgh Steelers’ T.J. Watt in 2021.
Can Garrett Actually Do it?
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams tried his best to “make sure that he (Garrett) doesn’t get the sack record on us and on me.” But Garrett, with the help of Shelby Harris, sacked Williams in the fourth quarter. The Browns, however, performed very poorly. Rookie Shedeur Sanders made 177 passing yards, no touchdowns, and was intercepted twice.
With zero points in three quarters, this match contributes to an awful 3-11 season. While Browns fans have many complaints, there can be none for the defense team.
The Browns are ranked 2nd in total defense by yards allowed, with around 273 Yds/G. They are the second-best in the league. Yet, they can and have lost games despite Garrett’s stellar performance. In their matchup against the Patriots, he made five solo sacks, his season high, and faced defeat.
With only three games left, questions arise about whether Garrett can share or surpass the record this season and whether the Browns support him and his aspirations.
