Myles Garrett Faces Steelers Threat as Division Rivals Aim to Stop NFL History

Myles Garrett is very close to making NFL history.

The defensive end scored a .5 sack against Josh Allen, tallying 22. To match the record for most sacks by a player in a season, he would have to repeat his Sunday performance.

But Garrett, the Browns’ star player, is expected to surpass the record.

Not an Easy Task for Myles Garrett

But can he? Garrett faces the Pittsburgh Steelers next week. At 9-6, ranked first in the AFC North, the Steelers are their division rival. And they also house the reigning sacks record holder.

In 2021, T.J. Watt scored 22.5 sacks across 15 games and won the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year award for his performance. He shares the record with Michela Strahan, who first made it in 2001.

Watt recently suffered from a collapsed lung and is currently recovering. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the pass rusher’s return to the field “remains murky and uncertain.” His return will boost the Steelers’ playoff push and make up for tough plays between him and Garrett.

The Steelers have other roadblocks for Garrett

In this season, Aaron Rodgers has averaged 3.2 air yards per completion, the quickest anyone has thrown in the league. In Week 16, he stood at his best with 2.65 seconds, with the lowest pressure rates of 21.9%. Garrett needs all the luck to sack this veteran.

Mike Tomlin, the Steelers’ head coach, will lay heavy focus on Garrett in his game plan. The 29-year-old would be doubled down and heavily chipped, as he was with the Bills. In a post-game conference after winning 23-9 against the Browns in October, Tomlin revealed they aimed to minimize Garrett’s impact.

“On the other side of the ball, we were able to stay on schedule and minimize those one-dimensional moments to minimize Myles Garrett's impact on the game,” he said.

“So, some of those agendas that we had, we were able to get accomplished, and I thought that's why we engineered victory.”

In that matchup, Garrett failed to score a sack, make a quarterback hit, or tackle for loss. Post the matchup with the Bears, he said the record “was always in reach.”

But with only two games left, Rodgers and Co. are stacking the odds against him in Week 15. Everyone wants to see if Will Myles Garrett will make history in such a dud Browns season.
