Myles Garrett Drops Retirement Update as Sack Record Still Out of Reach

Just as spectators were accepting the possibility of history slipping out of Myles Garrett’s hands, he dropped his retirement plans.

According to Sports Illustrated, in a media interaction, the 29-year-old stated he sees himself playing for just another five years.

“Yeah, I think five years is right at that time to take out, go ahead and hang the cleats up,” Garrett said.

This season has been trying for Garrett. With only one game left and 22 sacks to his name, Garrett has not yet matched the NFL record for most sacks by a player in a season. First etched by Hall of Fame member Michael Strahan in 2001, it was matched by T.J. Watt twenty years later.

After he sacked Caleb Williams in their matchup against the Bears, the defensive end said that the record was “always in reach.” He said he wants to get ahead of Strahan and Watt.

“So, I do think about if I could, if I can do it, and I think I’m only getting better,” he told the reporters.

“I think the numbers are only pertained to look similar to how they are right now. So, I’ll be knocking on his door pretty soon. He’s got the little graveyard he did a couple years back. We had all these graves, and he had to show me up. But it’s okay, Imma catch him.”

Garrett’s ambition is, of course, to surpass that record but also catch up to Bruce Smith. With 200 under his name, he holds the record for most sacks by a player in the NFL. Smith achieved this feat in a career spanning across 19 seasons and two teams.

But Garrett, with 124.5 sacks, wants to accomplish this in 14 years.

What About the Super Bowl?

Looking at his team’s track record, Garrett had requested a trade in an open letter to his fans and franchise before the season commenced.

“While I've loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won't allow me to be complacent,” Garrett wrote. “The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton; it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.”

Andrew Berry, the Browns’ general manager, stated that Garrett would not be traded under any circumstances. Especially since he signed a $160 million four-year contract extension, and is currently under contract till 2030.

Has Garrett given up on this dream and instead focused on retirement plans? Will Myles Garrett become a great that never was because of the Browns?
