Mike Vrabel Fuming with Match Official as Frustrations Reach Boiling Point
Mike Vrabel's frustration with the officials finally boiled over. During the fourth-quarter of the Super Bowl, a controversial moment sent the Patriots' head coach into a heated exchange that overshadowed the game.
Stefon Diggs, who had already been involved in a confrontation in the first half, tangled with Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe on the boundary line.
Vrabel headed to referee Eugene Hall, who was right after Jobe put Diggs to the ground after he had gone out of bounds. The two had an altercation, but the officials threw no flag. At the time, NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay maintained there should have been a flag.
"Absolutely. (Jobe) is clearly out of the play, he’s clearly out of bounds, he knocks (Diggs) down. He absolutely should’ve been penalized."
Had there been one, ejection could have been one of the penalties Jobe may have received. However, when Cris Collinsworth asked if there were any grounds to have Jobe penalized, McAulay responded with:
"He can’t, Cris, because they didn’t throw a flag at all on the field so (the officials in) New York can’t do anything with this at this point."
Vrabel was visibly frustrated. In addition to the lack of a flag, the Patriots also had to deal with the Seahawks' 19-0 lead at the time. While Drake Maye followed it up with two touchdowns, it was all in vain. That frustration carried over into his post-game media session.
Mike Vrabel Is Disappointed But Already Gearing Up For the 2026 Season
In a post-game media session after the matchup, Vrabel tried to stay optimistic.
“Disappointed. I reminded them that we’re 307 days into what hopefully is a long, successful relationship and program. Every year, somebody’s going to lose this game. We have to remember what it feels like and make sure it’s not repeatable.”
This defeat marks the eighth year since the Patriots last won the Super Bowl Championship in 2018. The Patriots came close, but the Lombardi Trophy remained out of reach.
