Mike Tomlin Joins NBC as Studio Analyst on Football Night in America After Steelers Departure

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ former head coach, Mike Tomlin, stepped down from his role on January 13, 2026, after spending 19 seasons in the NFL.

However, he would not be completely away from the sport.

According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, a longtime divisional rival of the Cleveland Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin, is entering another chapter of his life as a studio analyst for NBC.

And Ari Meirov posted the update on his X.

“Former #Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has reached an agreement on a deal to join NBC as a top studio analyst on its Sunday night pregame show, “Football Night in America,” per @AndrewMarchand,” he wrote.

Tomlin led the Steelers to Super Bowl XLIII victory and recorded 13 playoff appearances, 8 divisional titles, and 3 AFC Championship Game appearances during his 19 seasons with the team.

So, after he retired from the NFL, various networks showed interest in hiring him, including Fox Sports, ESPN, CBS, and Amazon Prime Video.

Until now, it was widely speculated that Mike Tomlin would join Fox Sports, given his close relationship with Jay Glazer of Fox NFL Sunday.

Jay Glazer and Mike Tomlin co-founded an annual day-drinking gathering for NFL head coaches 18 years ago. Last month, Glazer even gave a shout-out to his longtime friend, Tomlin.

“I started this with Mike Tomlin 18 years ago (yes, we raised a glass to him) to get the head coach fraternity to bond together, bounce things off each other, ask each other for advice and to celebrate how cool life is TOGETHER,” he wrote on his X.

However, Mike Tomlin went in the other direction and joined Football Night in America after former head coach Tony Dungy announced his departure from the studio following a 17-year run on March 12, 2026.

With this, Tomlin is set to join the highest-rated Sunday NFL pregame show’s hosts, Maria Taylor, former Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, and Devin McCourty.

How Mike Tomlin Could Boost NBC’s NFL Viewership?

According to USA Today’s Nate Davis, Mike Tomlin has a unique personality, which could make him a media superstar.

Tomlin’s press conferences generally have fun elements due to his famous one-liners. One such moment came during a post-game press conference, where reporters were seated to ask their unanswered questions.

However, no one asked anything, leaving Mike Tomlin to smile and deliver a brief, sarcastic remark, “Thank you!” before leaving.

Another such moment came when Tomlin said, “It’s a fine line between drinking wine and squashing grapes,” which actually means, “It’s a fine line between winning and losing.”

More fun remarks like these could help NBC gain new viewers with Mike Tomlin.
