When former Washington Commanders (formerly known as the Washington Redskins) RB Clinton Portis voluntarily retired on August 23, 2012, it left fans stunned and searching for answers. But years later, Portis explained the reason behind his action.

“Once they moved Sean T.’s locker out of the locker room, my love for the game disappeared,” Portis told Fox Sports’ Shannon Sharpe back in 2021, as per NBC.

Sean Taylor passed away during a home invasion attempt back in 2007. The tragedy sent shockwaves throughout the football world as he was one of the most promising safeties in the game.

Having played four seasons with the Redskins, Taylor's locker was positioned beside that of Clinton Portis. It stood as both a painful reminder of the loss and a memorial, covered in plexiglass, until the team decided to move it to FedExField for public viewing.

“Everybody looked [at me] like, ‘Oh, you left the game so early. Nah, I sat in a locker room where, for a guy that we looked at as a god, and I saw them remove his locker and put someone else there to create space, “ Portis said. "There was plenty of space in the locker room. You could’ve built a new locker. You didn’t have to remove Sean Taylor’s locker."

Clinton Portis was unable to accept the decision made by the Redskins, and it ultimately forced him into retirement.

However, Portis later admitted that he may have been a bit too sensitive.

While the Redskins' decision certainly hastened the RB's retirement, Portis later admitted that he was a bit sensitive at the time and didn't understand why the team made that decision.

“At that time, I was too sensitive,” Portis said. “I was too sensitive at that moment, and it happened too early. Now, I think it’s a great idea that everyone gets to see it and it’s in the stadium and every fan and anybody who wants to acknowledge Sean, to see Sean, gets an opportunity to walk past that locker or take a picture.”

Portis admitted that he couldn't accept what the Redskins did at the time. He said that seeing Taylor's locker removed, despite everything he had meant to the franchise, changed his outlook on the game.

However, with time, he made peace with the decision and was glad that the public could pay their respects to Sean Taylor

That said, this was not the only reason behind his retirement. Portis added that the death of his grandmother and his clashes with former head coach Jim Zorn were additional factors that influenced his decision.
