Prosecution argued at a pre-trial detention hearing that Terrion Arnold should remain in custody through trial. In response, the Detroit Lions’ cornerback has hired a prominent defense attorney to protect his NFL career.

"A hearing will be held Monday morning in Tampa to determine whether Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold will be held in custody, pending his trial," ESPN Senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported. "Court filings confirm Arnold has retained noted Denver attorney Harvey Steinberg to represent him in this case."

Mike Florio of NBC Sports, in his June 28 article, assessed Arnold's situation. He reported that Harvey Steinberg’s first move would be to ensure Arnold continues his career while the case against him proceeds. 

"Steinberg’s effort to do so for Arnold will presumably commence on Monday, when Steinberg attempts to allow Arnold to continue his football career while the case against him proceeds," Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported.

If Steinberg succeeds in keeping Arnold out of custody while proceeding, the 23-year-old cornerback would remain in a safety net. 

“This doesn’t mean the NFL won’t place Arnold on paid leave. But the key is that the leave would be paid. If Arnold remains in custody, he won’t be,” Florio added.

A refusal bond would have severe financial implications, given the gravity of the charges pressed against him. Hence, Arnold’s priority becomes avoiding being held without bond pending trial. 

Steinberg could be just the person who could ensure this. According to the official website of the Steinberg law firm, Sports Illustrated described him as “the man Colorado sports figures call when they’re in trouble.” 

The founding partner of the law firm Springer & Steinberg, P.C, Steinberg has represented many figures from the NFL. Most recently, Jonathon Cooper of the Denver Broncos hired him for a case involving him and his girlfriend.

His other clients include John Elway, Elway’s son, Jack, Kellen Winslow II, Jerry Jeudy, John Bowlen (the son of former Broncos owner Pat Bowlen), Brandon Marshall, and Elvis Dumervil. 

“The system has to be held accountable. And if the system works, justice occurs. If it’s broken, that’s when there are problems,” Steinberg told CBS in 2015, when asked about his approach. 

What is Terrion Arnold charged with and why?

Terrion Arnold is linked to a February case in Tampa, Florida. On February 3, Arnold called a police station at 10 p.m. ET  to report that he had been robbed of $100,000 in cash, an $80,000 necklace, and other possessions, per the Athletic.

However, he was arrested for kidnapping and robbery after evidence suggested that he could be the primary conspirator.

“Arnold is facing multiple felony charges which carry a potential sentence of up to life in prison,” a statement from the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office read, per the same the Athletic report.

According to the report, the Tampa Police Department announced the development on the night of June 24.
