"Lions are doomed": NFL Fans Turn on Franchise for Unexpected $1.63B Team

The NFL Owners entering uncharted waters is nothing new, and now Detroit Lions owner Sheila Hamp is no exception with her latest move in the Indian Premier League.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Detroit Lions owner Sheila Hamp joined a consortium that acquired the Rajasthan Royals, a team in the Indian Premier League. mykhel.com reported:
"The consortium backing the acquisition includes two globally recognized sports owners-Rob Walton of the Walmart family and Sheila Ford Hamp of the Ford Motor dynasty-bringing together expertise from technology, retail, automotive, and professional sports."
For those who don't know, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 (T20) cricket league in India. The Rajasthan Royals are the inaugural champions of the league, just as the Lions are part of the NFL. But the fans are not happy.
One said, "She bought this team because she knows the Lions are doomed". But Hamp is not the only NFL owner involved in this move.
Joining Hamp in co-ownership is Kal Somani, a tech entrepreneur from the United States, and Rob Walton, the owner of the Denver Broncos and son of Walmart founder Sam Walton. The franchise was reportedly sold for $1.63 billion.
The Royals became the first IPL team to surpass the billion-dollar valuation milestone, along with another IPL franchise, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which was sold for $1.79 billion hours later.
The same trio also owns the Motor City Golf Club, a golf franchise set to debut in 2027. But the NFL fans are not happy.
NFL Fans Rip Into Detroit Lions Over $1.63B Move
One fan said, "Get us a super bowl ring then find another side hustle."
The Detroit Lions were originally established in 1930. But the team has still not won the Super Bowl in all these years. This fan is definitely not happy with that.
One comment read, "Was there last championship 1957 too?" Another fan teased, "The last time the Lions won a championship, India had been independent for a grand total of 10 years." The Lions last won an NFL championship in 1957. India gained independence in 1947.
Another fan commented, "So now we know why we are in the clearance rack in FA." The Detroit Lions have been relatively moderate spenders in the 2026 NFL free agency. They didn’t go on a huge spending spree like some teams.
What do you think about the move? Let us know in the comments!
