Kirk Cousins’ Job At Risk Just Weeks After Kevin Stefanski’s Arrival at Falcons
Kevin Stefanski and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank are cleaning house. After head coach Raheem Morris, GM Terry Fontenot, and CEO Rich McKay, NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed QB Kirk Cousins might be the next on the list.
In a conversation with Pat McAfee, he said, "Kirk Cousins is expected to be released. He will be released before the new league year begins. I think he would like to play, but he's gonna consider all of his options."
There are a few reasons why Cousins' exit might benefit both parties. On January 6, Atlanta and the veteran QB agreed to a unique contract, shelfing his salary from $35 million down to just $2.1 million.
The remaining $32.9 million will move to 2027. If Cousins remains on the roster after March 13, which is the third day of the new league year, a total of $67.9 million in salary for the next season becomes guaranteed. However, the team is looking to release Cousins before the 13th. And it's not surprising.
Even though Cousins' 7 touchdowns in his last five regular-season games helped the team to victory, his early-season inconsistency proved costly. Moreover, new head coach Kevin Stefanski may look to Michael Penix Jr. for the starting QB job.
As a result, Cousins now has a few options.
Kirk Cousins' Next Destination In The NFL
Reports suggest Cousins could be reuniting with his former team, the Minnesota Vikings. It became more concrete after the veteran QB said this recently in an interview with Sports Illustrated.
"I kind of keep an open mind. Those conversations with the Falcons will happen in March and [we'll] kind of see where it all goes. But I've learned through my 14 years that anything can happen."
Cousins was productive for the Vikings, helping them qualify for the playoffs in three out of six seasons. In 88 games, the 37-year-old scored a total of 171 touchdowns and threw for 23,265 yards.
