Josh Allen has given the Buffalo Bills fans a clear answer about the team’s new alternate look. After Buffalo’s first training camp practice on Wednesday in Pittsford, New York, he pushed back against criticism and explained why the gray design matched the team’s direction. 

ESPN reporter Alaina Getzenberg reported his comments on July 29, two days after the uniform reveal. By then, fans had criticized the all-gray jersey-and-pants set for moving away from Buffalo’s familiar red, white, and blue style. 

“Stop hating on the jerseys, guys,” Allen said.

In fact, the “Nickel City” uniform marked the first time the Bills had made gray the main color of an alternate set, and they planned to wear it for two games.

“I enjoy them. I think it’s very symbolic of what we want to do and what we want to be,” Allen said as per ESPN. "But at some point, too, we are moving forward. We have to move forward and do something new—and that’s what we’re doing.”

The set featured gray jerseys and pants, a blue helmet, and a red charging symbol. NFL rules required Buffalo to use shades from its current color palette, but the team had never placed this much focus on gray.

The uniforms haven't exactly won over Bills Mafia. Fans have blasted the flat gray-on-gray look for stripping away the bold blue, red, and white identity Buffalo is known for.

Even more controversial, the new blue helmet ditches the iconic charging buffalo logo entirely, replacing it with a simple red stripe, a design choice many supporters say takes away one of the franchise's most recognizable symbols.

Allen tied that choice to wider changes. Buffalo is preparing to open a new Highmark Stadium and begin camp under first-time head coach Joe Brady after firing Sean McDermott in January.

Allen had answered the uniform critics, but Buffalo’s fresh start had begun to matter more through his work with a major new target.

Josh Allen helped DJ Moore earn a leading role in Buffalo’s new offense

Buffalo’s changes reached the offense as Josh Allen connected with DJ Moore during camp. Moore made a diving catch on Wednesday and caught a deep touchdown on Thursday.

The Bills brought in Moore and extended his guaranteed money through 2027, showing that they viewed him as a leading receiver. Allen gave him first-team work while other wideouts fought for roles.

“I feel myself trying to be perfect when I’m throwing to him in some of the routes on air,” Allen said after the first day of camp, as WGRZ-TV shared on YouTube. “And [on Wednesday] I walked up to him and said I’m just going to throw it. I’m going to pick a spot and let it go. I’m not trying to aim it anymore. And I feel like once I said that, things kind of clicked for us. And each day that goes by, we are going to get more comfortable with each other.”

From there, the change helped Allen throw freely and let Moore react naturally. Their early success gave Buffalo a possible top receiver who could handle more snaps.

At the same time, Moore’s rise could reshape the room. Khalil Shakir could keep working from the slot, while Keon Coleman faced pressure to earn steady playing time in his third season.
