JJ McCarthy Linked to Rams in Major Move as Matthew Stafford's Backup

After a disappointing 10-game rookie season, JJ McCarthy has been pushed to the sidelines in the Minnesota Vikings. The franchise signed Kyler Murray, leaving his future uncertain. However, the latest update in the offseason has linked McCarthy with the reigning MVP of the Los Angeles Rams.
Ralph Vacchiano, an NFL columnist for FOX Sports, dropped an update about McCarthy's future in an April 11 article. With the Vikings' quarterback picking up trade buzz, he might benefit in the long term by being the backup for Rams' Matthew Stafford.
“The Vikings sure look like they’ve moved on from the former 10th overall pick (2024) by signing Kyler Murray. But McCarthy is still young. He could benefit from learning under McVay on a loaded offensive team,” Vacchiano wrote.
“And not only do the Rams need to start thinking about who their quarterback will be after 38-year-old Matthew Stafford is done, they also have to be prepared if he breaks down this season. Right now, their backup is Stetson Bennett. McCarthy would at least be an upgrade over that. And that’s important for an expected Super Bowl contender.”
Talking about a statement debut? McCarthy joined Fran Tarkenton in the record books as the only Vikings quarterback to throw multiple touchdowns in their first NFL game since 1961.
McCarthy was stunning with 11 touchdowns and 1,632 yards, if we could look past the whopping 12 interceptions he threw in 10 games. Even then, his time as a starter in Minnesota is likely to be over if Murray and Kevin O’Connell find the middle ground.
The timing, however, might be a blessing in disguise for McCarthy to find a new NFL home. Looking to plan things after Stafford, who is 38-years-old, the Rams come off as the ideal landing spot for McCarthy.
After all, Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay is a pro in reviving the young quarterbacks. Along with this, Stafford might serve McCarthy as a valuable mentor.
Los Angeles Rams’ Need A Younger Quarterback and their prospective plan for JJ McCarthy
The 2025 season ended with him sweeping the MVP award, but there were cracks in his performances. According to Holzman-Escareno, Stafford had the worst passer rating when facing pressure in these playoffs (24.8).
Their first backup, Jimmy Garoppolo, is 34-years-old and just re-signed for another year. Stetson Bennett, 28, is third on the roster. Stafford is still elite, but not immune to regression or injuries. A young quarterback gives them a fallback with upside.
Garoppolo and Bennett can steady the ship, for sure. But can they elevate it? That will be tough. A young quarterback. could eventually add mobility. At just 23, McCarthy fits perfectly into a long-term plan. He is young enough to develop, but not so raw that you’re starting from scratch, a perfect middle ground.
If the Rams want to keep their championship chances alive, they must secure a talented backup who needs a little polishing. The franchise has won only two Super Bowl championships in 22 years.
In a mock draft packed with trades, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell has something interesting brewing for Los Angeles. He envisions the Rams going down from No. 13 in a deal with the Minnesota Vikings, landing picks No. 18, No. 97, and J.J. McCarthy in return.
