In week 14 of the 2025 NFL season, the chances of the defending champions defending their title sank even lower. The Eagles lost to the Chargers in a 19-22 scoreline, taking the Chargers’ record to 9-4, while the Eagles fell to 8-5. Jalen Hurts completed 21 of 40 passes for 240 yards with TDs, four INTs, and a 31.2 passer rating. One major reason for this loss was Hurts' performance.

He failed to show up in the game, and he is not shy to admit it.

"I didn't play well enough. Too many turnovers. Lots of opportunities, especially when we get on the other side of the 50 [yard line], and I wasn't able to get us in the box,” Hurts said. This was his first career game with four interceptions and fifth career start with a sub-40 passer rating (second most since 2020, behind only Mac Jones' six).

Hurts was first intercepted at 8:31 in the 2nd quarter by Da’Shawn Hand at the Chargers’ 17. Then again, with 4:45 left in the 2nd quarter, by Donte Jackson at the Eagles’ 36. His third interception came in the 4th quarter on a deep middle throw picked off by Cameron Hart at the Chargers’ 38. The fourth was the game-ending overtime interception by Tony Jefferson at the 1-yard line.

Taking responsibility, the QB said, “There's no excuses. I know, being all subjective in terms of how you look at it. Obviously, we always feel like we got a chance, but we just got to come together and find ways to win, and I have to find the way to win." In the coming weeks, the Eagles have to face the Raiders at home. Then go on the road to play the Commanders and the Bills. 

They will be finishing the season with another matchup against the Commanders. If they can win all those games, maybe they have a chance at winning the Super Bowl again. Hurts must leave the setback of this game behind to make sure he wins the next one. Luckily, the team is not letting him take the blame. 

Jalen Hurts Does Not Share the Blame Alone

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni joined Hurts in sharing the blame for the game. The HC said that the loss stunk, saying that many turnovers were uncharacteristic of them, “and every time it's going to come down to coaching well enough and executing well enough." 

He pointed out that Hurts will take the blame because the ball is always in his hands, but emphasized that it isn’t all on the quarterback. Sirianni said Hurts shouldn’t shoulder it alone and that he himself needs to coach better, stressing that these mistakes are never just about one player’s execution. 

“It's always that we look at ourselves as coaches first. Did we help him be in a position to succeed and then execute, right? So obviously, [you] never want to turn the ball over. We've been pretty good at that, and tonight was a little uncharacteristic of ourselves,” he added.

Hurts wasn’t the only one making mistakes. A.J. Brown dropped what appeared to be a sure touchdown on a deep pass from Hurts. That drop cost Philly a big scoring opportunity. There was also a holding penalty (on Jordan Mailata) that wiped off a would-be touchdown, killing a scoring drive.
