Insider Explains Why Browns Have Not Cut Dillon Gabriel After Drafting QB
The addition of Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green has raised some concerns regarding Cleveland Browns' stacked QB room. However, a recent take from a Browns insider has revealed why Green and Dillon Gabriel are important to the squad.
During an interview with Cleveland's Dave Bacon, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot elaborated on her article regarding Gabriel's role on the Browns' roster. She also discusses as to why Gabriel deserves a 'fair' chance.
“Dillon Gabriel is a player who can challenge for the number three quarterback job on this team. He's someone that has demonstrated a good grasp of the Todd Monk in offense," Cabot said. "Dillon really didn't get a fair chance last year. The Browns realize there is some merit to him as a future quality quarterback in the NFL.”

Cabot’s revelation contrasts with the reports that came from the 2026 Berea minicamp, just before the draft.
The 2025 third-round pick did not take any first-team snaps, unlike his counterparts, Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson. Although head coach Todd Monken cleared that there is no 'two-man race,' Gabriel did not sound in tune with Monken.
However, if Cabot’s interview is an extension of her deep dive into Gabriel’s place on the QB depth chart, then it is a pleasant development for the young QB.
In her article, she argued that Gabriel is still valuable to the Browns. He recorded 937 yards and threw for seven touchdowns in his rookie season last year.
“They’re not keeping Gabriel on the roster just to trade him. The new coaching staff has liked what it’s seen of him so far this offseason, and believe he’s worth a longer look,” Cabot wrote in her April 27 report. “With Green on board, those two will essentially vie for the developmental spot, while Watson and Sanders battle for the starting job.”
The Browns appear to have a cautious approach to their offense this season after their 2025 record. Despite Cabot’s beliefs, trade rumors around Gabriel keep growing.
Dillon Gabriel Named A Good Backup For Two NFC Franchises
Kristopher Knox of the Blecher Report has named two NFC teams as possible landing spots for quarterback Dillon Gabriel. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons are emerging as the potential suitors for the young quarterback.
If Gabriel ends up with the latter, he would reunite with his former head coach, Kevin Stefanski. The report also suggests that Gabriel is a better fit for Stefanski than for the current Browns' offense.
“While teams won’t be clamoring to add Gabriel as a potential starter, the 25-year-old should draw interest as a backup,” Knox wrote on April 29. “The Browns will probably take what they can get for Gabriel, who should interest teams that lack a young developmental backup.”
While the picture looks bleak for Gabriel at the moment, Cabot believes he is more important than he would appear. But what the Browns do next cannot be said for sure. What are your thoughts?
