Insider Claims Browns Open to Making 1st Round Trade Ahead of NFL Draft
Much has been discussed about how the Cleveland Browns would use their precious overall sixth-round pick. But a new update over the pick has created a buzz with the 2026 Draft just days away.
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Browns are receiving trade inquiries and are open to giving away their pick.
“One year later, the Browns are already taking calls about the No. 6 pick, and sources said they're open to moving it,” ESPN's Schefter reported.
The Browns have nine picks this year after ending the 2025 season on a 5-12 note. But Andrew Berry and the Browns can walk the trade routes, just like last year, when they gave away their second overall pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Berry was asked about trading down from the sixth pick in the upcoming draft. But his response was unclear.
“I’d go back to what I’ve said in the past, our mindset going into the draft, with our most valuable asset, isn’t about, ‘hey, just trade it away,’" said the Browns' general manager. "It’s maximizing the asset."
Holding nine selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, Cleveland will be able to boost their assets in a trade-down scenario.
But trading their first-round pick is certainly a risky move that could make or break the team. For instance, in the 2022 trade, the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans.
The quarterback signed a five-year contract for $230 million, only to be called a “swing and a miss” by franchise owner Jimmy Haslam in April 2025. Plagued by injuries, Watson compiled a 9-10 record over three seasons in Cleveland.
But there is another side to the trade story as well. The Browns gave away their 2nd, 104th, and 200th to the Jaguars in exchange for the 5th, 36th, and 126th picks.
Cleveland used this trade to pick defensive tackle Mason Graham and running back Quinshon Judkins, who were standout performers in their rookie season.
Players Whom Cleveland Browns Could Miss if They Give Away No.6 Pick
Until now, it was widely reported that the franchise would utilise this slot to rope in a new quarterback. And the most popular name was Ty Simpson. The self-assured “program changer” threw 28 touchdowns, five interceptions for 3,567 yards.
“[S]on of a coach, really smart, very driven, he’s physically talented,” Berry said about the Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback. “So, we’ve really enjoyed our time with Ty.”
The Browns will be targeting an offensive player. That's because they ranked 31st in the league in passing. Overall, the wide receiver corps delivered only 1,467 yards on 117 catches, finishing at the bottom of the league in both stats.
So, significant names like Carnell Tate, Jordyn Tyson, and Makai Lemon for the wide receiver position started doing rounds.
The Cleveland Browns might find a trade partner in the Dallas Cowboys, who are looking to bolster their defense. Holding Nos. 12 and 20, Dallas could help Cleveland secure three top-25 picks with the right deal.
