The Los Angeles Rams' veteran QB Matthew Stafford signed a new deal after his MVP performance in the 2025 season. Still, he might have to play a mentor role to the Rams' round 1 draft pick in the 2026 season, rookie quarterback Ty Simpson.

Well, it looks like the 23-year-old QB has been enjoying his time with Matthew Stafford and learning as much as he can from him. This is what he said about his relationship with the veteran.

"Anything that I can ask him, and I can just take in, I'm willing to," Simpson said as reported by the Los Angeles Times journalist, Gary Klein. "So I hope I'm not annoying him, but I really appreciate the 'big brother' kind of role that he's playing in my development."

The Rams, poised to be a Super Bowl contender, chose Simpson with the 13th pick of the 2026 NFL Draft. In 2025, 38-year-old Stafford, who had MVP-worthy stats, signed a new deal in late May that extended him through 2027.

Simpson, in the off-season, followed Stafford during OTAs and minicamp, learning a McVay offense that made him feel like he was learning while under fire.

“The biggest thing is just how detail-oriented everybody is,” Simpson said, as reported by the Los Angeles Times' Gary Klein. “It’s really, really cool because, coming from Alabama in the SEC, that’s how pro-ready I felt.”

He caught everyone's eye with his performance for the Alabama Crimson Tide last season. The 23-year-old threw for 3,567 yards and scored 28 touchdowns, one of the best that season.

In Klein's report, the Rams' head coach, Sean McVay, was satisfied with Simpson's progress so far, stating that while he was behind in overall teaching progression, the young QB was doing a great job.

As he has no obligations to play in 2026, he is in a position to take in as much knowledge from this veteran as he can.

That “big brother” dynamic Simpson referred to is definitely not one-sided. Stafford has been open and pretty clear about what he wants this relationship to look like.

Stafford tackled that concern in late June on the Green Light With Chris Long podcast. He made it clear that Simpson’s constant curiosity was never a burden.

"Hopefully, he comes away with a guy who treated him the right way, showed him what it was about, what it's like to be a true professional, and also be yourself," Stafford said on the Green Light With Chris Long Podcast. "I'm not some robot out there. Love playing the game, have fun with the game because it's a kids' game."

The tone embodies Stafford's classroom management style. Stafford was as open as possible regarding his priorities.

"My No. 1 job, I've said this 100 times, is to get our team and myself as ready to play as possible. And if he gathers information and he learns from that along the way, I'm fired up for our team," he added later.

Recently, it was reported that Simpson would start the year as QB3, with the assumption that Stafford would play at an MVP level throughout Super Bowl LXI.
