"I had to upgrade" - Dexter Lawrence opens up on the origin of his trash talk

Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has developed his own style of talking junk. He recently touched upon the origin of that part of his game.

On Ja’Marr Chase’s Chasing No. 1 podcast alongside Chase, Tee Higgins, and co-host Annie Agar, Lawrence discussed his approach to trash talk.

He credited former Clemson teammate Christian Wilkins with teaching him how to talk junk during their college days. Lawrence recalled how the pair would walk to the line and challenge offensive linemen with a simple message:

“No, that came from me and Christian in college. Christian really taught me how to talk junk. In college, we used to walk up to the line and just be like, ‘Y’all ain’t getting drafted off this tape.’ So I had to upgrade that, you know?”

Lawrence then revealed how his approach evolved after reaching the NFL. He now has a favorite line that puts the pressure directly on the opponent:

“Probably, ‘You’re gonna have to earn your paycheck this game.’ I like that one.”

Tee Higgins shares anecdote on the defensive tackle's trash talk

Tee Higgins then recalled the same example of Dexter Lawrence trash-talking during the podcast.

He narrated a teammate telling him that Lawrence had told an opposing lineman he would have to earn his paycheck that day. According to Higgins, Lawrence then “went crazy that game.”

Higgins’ recollection was a hilarious example of Lawrence putting his words into action.
