How Much Money Do Browns Have for Free Agency After Restructuring Multiple Contracts

The Cleveland Browns are in the midst of reconstructing their franchise with a restricted financial bandwidth. The franchise is desperate to fix its weak links, but one question remains: how much money can they dispense for free agency?

As per Sports Illustrated, the Browns have already revised quarterback Deshaun Watson’s contract on Friday and created cap space worth $36 million. The franchise had signed Watson for a whopping $230 million for five seasons.

It turned out to be a huge misjudgement on the management’s part as Watson appeared in only 19 games in four years. Watson has at last returned to play in his last season with the Browns after suffering from Achilles injuries, while his cap space rested at $80.3 million.

And his contract is not the only one being restructured. According to Browns insider Daniel Oyefusi’s ESPN report, the management is set to redo Denzel Ward’s contract next. As per SI, the Browns’ “cap compliant, that is, the team’s total player salaries and related costs,  are equal to or below the league’s salary cap for that season.”

Currently, the franchise is $25 million to $35 million under the cap limit.

These Changes Are Meant to Accommodate the Browns’ Newfound Agenda

General manager Andrew Berry stated that the team will enter free agency beginning Monday with “at least the chance that we’ll be more aggressive… more aggressive than last year.”

The franchise ended the 2025 season with a 5-12 record and was 30th in the league overall, solely because of the offensive unit. And in 2024, they had won only four games.

With that, the biggest priority for the Browns is to fix their offensive line. Most recently, the franchise picked up tackle Tytus Howard and is rumored to be in talks with former Green Bay Packers tackle Rasheed Walker.

Moreover, veteran guard Joel Bitonio has remained silent on his retirement or free agency, further restricting cap space.

And the implications are heavy. The franchise needs better wide receivers, linemen, and even a quarterback.

Experts have suggested free agents like the Chicago Bears left tackle Braxton Jones, the Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce, and the Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray as suitable prospects.

But can Berry and the management afford even to consider a new quarterback? Especially as they cannot let go of Watson and Sanders, who are vying to become QB1?

What are your thoughts on this situation?
