“Got Banged Up”: Giants Get Injury Update on Abdul Carter After Minicamp Setback
The New York Giants are dealing with an injury scare concerning their linebacker, Abdul Carter. Carter left the first practice of the mandatory minicamp with an ankle injury on Monday afternoon.
NFL columnist and Giants’ beat writer Pat Leonard shared an update on the linebacker’s injury on X.
“Giants edge Abdul Carter had his entire left shoe and sock off, and he’s being examined by trainers. He’s limping very gingerly off to the side,” Leonard reported June 9. “I didn’t see it happen, but Carter got banged during this practice. He just limped into the indoor field as practice continues outside.”
The Giants’ head coach, John Harbaugh, spoke with the media after the practice and offered an update on Carter’s condition. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the coach said that the linebacker twisted his ankle, but the injury “doesn’t look serious”.
Jordan Raanan of ESPN also reported that Carter left Monday’s practice early and didn’t return. He added that the Giants’ initial belief is that their 2025-drafted linebacker is okay.
Carter was the Giants’ No.3 pick during the 2025 NFL Draft. The rookie didn’t miss a single game in his debut year, but didn’t perform as per the team’s expectations.
The initial 12 games of the season saw him register only half a sack. Throughout the 2025 season, Carter recorded a total of 43 tackles, seven tackles for loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The Giants’ linebacker room places Carter alongside veterans Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. The team used their No.5 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to add Arvell Reese to bolster the defense ahead of their first season under the new coach, Harbaugh.
The Giants’ mandatory minicamp is currently underway till Wednesday. The team is then off until they have to report for the training in West Virginia in July.
The same day, Carter got injured, marked the return of a running back after an injury in October.
Giants’ Injury Updates Become Key Storyline Ahead of the 2026 Season.
The Giants appear to be dealing with injuries now and then. They already have three players down due to Achilles tears during the spring, reported Chris Pflum of SB Nation.
Per Jordan Raanan of ESPN, the same day Carter left practice with an ankle injury, running back Cam Skattebo also returned from an ankle injury sustained in October.
"I was happy. He was telling me [Monday] … and then the trainer told me too that he was going to get some plays in groups, some plays in team [periods]," Harbaugh said. "That's where you want him to be. So he's worked super hard, super hard."
Skattebo suffered an open tibia fracture, a dislocated ankle and a ruptured deltoid ligament in his rookie year. Coach Harbaugh had shared in March that the running back would be back in the spring, as per the anticipated timeline.
Harbaugh’s timeline proved to be right as Skattebo was seen running routes and participating in drills. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.
