As the quarterback competition in Cleveland continues, Browns’ general manager, Andrew Berry, gave an interesting statement on both quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.

On The Schrager Hour with Peter Schrager, Berry offered his take on the QB1 competition that has been brewing during the June 9-11 minicamp.

“In terms of quarterback, it’s been good competition this spring between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson,” said Berry on Wednesday. "It's good to see Deshaun healthy and moving...Shedeur, he's made incredible strides over the last eight weeks...He's naturally accurate as a quarterback."

Berry shared that Watson has been learning the new system and has had an "incredible" spring practice during the offseason. 

The veteran Watson, who came to Cleveland in 2022, hasn’t been on the field since October 2024, when he suffered an Achilles injury.

The 30-year-old is now in his final year of contract and will make a comeback after missing the entirety of the 2025 season, where Sanders started seven games and went 3-4.

Berry praised Sanders, who is making “big strides” with his command over the operation and control over huddles. The GM also shared that the Browns are looking forward to seeing how the QB1 competition plays out during the training camp and in the preseason games.

The GM concluded by saying that they are being “cautiously optimistic” on both QBs, evaluating their play in game settings and then making a final decision on their QB1 for the 2026 season. 

Berry Shares Opinion About 2027 Quarterback Decision After Garrett Trade

The Cleveland Browns made headlines back in 2022 for the massive $230 million contract they made with Watson. They made news again with the trade of their star defensive player, Myles Garrett, to the Rams.

The Browns’ GM, Andrew Berry, spoke with the media last week and addressed the controversial Garrett trade and fielded questions about the future.

Per Tzvi Machlin of The Spun, one of the questions Berry was asked was whether he saw the first-round pick of 2027 as an opportunity to address the looming franchise QB issue. 

“We’re way too premature to figure out how we’re going to deploy that asset,” said Berry. “We’ve got an entire season to play and a group of players that we’re excited to see this fall. We’ll deal with 2027 in 2027.”

Machlin concluded by saying that the first-round pick (2027), the second-round pick (2028) and the third-round pick (2029) the Browns received during the Garrett-Verse trade give them “a lot more ammo” to retool their team.
