LeRoy Irvin, the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback of the Los Angeles Rams, passed away on Thursday. He was 68 years old. The LA Rams announced this tragic news on social media. 

“We mourn the loss of Rams legend LeRoy Irvin,” the team said in its official statement. “We extend our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Irvin had an 11-year NFL career. He spent 10 seasons with the Rams as their CB and punt returner. However, he spent his final season with the Detroit Lions in 1990. 

Although the Rams didn’t disclose any details of Irvin’s passing, Los Angeles-based journalist Eric Geller reported that the former Rams cornerback had been battling throat cancer. Geller added that he worked with Irvin on a broadcasting team after the footballer’s retirement.

Irvin was the third-round, 70th overall pick of the Rams during the 1980 NFL Draft. He played 143 games with the Rams, starting 104. He was named first-team All-Pro in 1981 and 1986.

The Rams’ all-time leaderboard features Irvin in the second spot with his 1,457 punt return yards. His 34 interceptions with the Rams are recorded as the third-highest in the franchise’s history.

Irvin’s former teammate from 1983 to 1987 and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson mourned Irvin’s passing and honored him in his Instagram post.

“Devastated to hear about the passing of my brother, teammate and Rams’ legend LeRoy Irvin,” wrote Dickerson in the caption. “LeRoy wasn’t just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy. Rest in peace, my brother. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the Irvin family and all of Rams Nation.”

After the Los Angeles Rams announced LeRoy Irvin's passing on X, fans flocked to the post and honored the legend. 

“Gone, but never forgotten. Rest in peace, Rams legend,” wrote a fan in Irvin’s honor. 

After his retirement, Irvin pursued his career as a football coach, broadcaster, and businessman. A fan remembered him for his life after the NFL. 

“LeRoy was also Coach Irvin. He coached at Cal State Northridge in the 90s. I was lucky enough to coach with him. What a kind soul he was!’ remembered a fan.

A few fans reminisced about their childhood spent watching the punt returner and CB play in the league. 

“Another piece of my childhood gone. Damn it sucks to get old. RIP LeRoy Irvin,” commented a user. 

Another user posted, “One of my all-time favorite players as a young boy.”

Fans remembered the Rams legend for his community work off the field. One of his initiatives was the “LeRoy Irvin Field of Hope” project that worked towards changing the lives of orphans and providing them with better opportunities. 

“Great player, even greater man off the field supporting community needs and connecting people. Condolences to the Irvin family. #LA47,” commented a fan. 

As tributes continue to pour in, fans are honoring Irvin as both a Rams icon and someone who made a meaningful contribution to society. Irvin leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
