Giants Veteran Dexter Lawrence Seeks Exit as All-Pro DT Shuns Practice

Offseason drama might see another player enter the market. The New York Giants will have to say goodbye to veteran defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II, who has requested a trade. The news comes amid a lot of scrutiny around the team's handling of Lawrence's future.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that this move comes after three years of contract negotiations between Lawrence and the Giants. In an X post, he also revealed that the DT "will not be participating in the team’s off-season workout program."
This is a big loss for the Giants, as Lawrence was one of the best players on the roster. The three-time Pro Bowl honoree recorded a total of 341 tackles and 30.5 sacks over seven years with the team. He had signed a four-year extension in 2023 for a $90 million paycheck. He still had two years left on the contract.
The defensive tackle did not have a good outing last season, which fueled trade rumors this offseason. But he has remained an anchor in the Giants' defensive line since 2019. He was selected as the 17th pick by the team in the 2019 draft, which shows that Lawrence was an elite player. Amid the mystery surrounding his place on the team, head coach John Harbaugh had a glowing review for the defensive tackle.
"He's super, super important," he said in February. "He's a cornerstone football player -- not really a cornerstone, more like the middle stone. He's right in the middle. He's a very big stone, and he's a very active, athletic one."
Dexter Lawrence's exit from the Giants marks the end of a lot of speculation. It all comes down to the rift that has grown between the DT and the team over the last few years.
Dexter Lawrence's departure now puts onus on New York Giants
ESPN's Jordan Raanan said that Lawrence was not happy for "quite some time." He still had a good season in 2024, until an elbow injury cut it short. If the Giants follow through with the DT's request, they would have to part with him for much less than expected.
Had this news come last year, the franchise wouldn't have been in this position. They would stand a chance to ask for a price in the range of the Trey Hendrickson or Micah Parsons trade. He was voted the 17th best player in the league's Top 100 before the 2025 season. Hendrickson is the only player ahead of him in that list who signed with a new team.
It would financially be better for New York to work on flipping Dexter Lawrence's decision. 2025 may simply have been a blip in his career, and he has all the reasons to bounce back in the future. Giants general manager Joe Schoen touched upon this aspect at the NFL's annual meeting.
“We have a lot of those conversations as we continue to build or, to your point, open up money,” he said. “Like, where can we do it? Could we do an extension with other players? What does that look like? So we're always having those conversations, not only with Dexter, but on other players. And that's part of our mapping out the offseason and planning.”
