Giants HC Issues Stern Message to Cam Skattebo at Minicamp
After a season-ending injury cut short his rookie campaign, Cam Skattebo is finally back on the field. However, the New York Giants' head coach has a small warning as the young running back resumes his journey.
“I did tell him no back flips, though,” John Harbaugh said, according to FOX Sports analyst Ralph Vacchiano.
Back flips are common for Skattebo. Last October, he pulled one out after scoring one of his three touchdowns in last October's upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The excitement didn't last long. When the Giants returned to Philadelphia two weeks later, Skattebo suffered a gruesome ankle injury that ended his season. According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, the open dislocation was serious enough to be treated as an emergency medical situation.
Almost seven months after his season-ending ankle injury, Skattebo was back to full confidence. In videos shared by Raanan from Brian Burns' celebrity softball event, the Giants running back launched a home run and celebrated in familiar fashion with a backflip after crossing home plate on May 30.
This led Harbaugh to be cautious about Skattebo and come up with the stern message.
Skattebo was present at the Giants’ OTAs last month. However, as reported by The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, he was “suited up but not practicing."
However, at the mandatory New York Giants mini-camp on June 8, Harbaugh was satisfied with Skattebo's performance.
John Harbaugh Impressed With Cam Skattebo's Efforts
Speaking to reporters, as Vacchiano noted, Harbaugh was understandably pleased to see Skattebo healthy enough to participate in the Giants' practice.
“I was happy, the head coach said of Skattebo’s participation in practice. “He was telling me today, and the trainer told me, too, that he was going to get some plays in group and plays in team, and I was like, that’s where you want him to be. He’s worked super hard, super hard.”
That said, he has shown positive progress during Monday's camp, participating in individual drills, taking handoffs, running routes, and catching passes. The Giants believe that Skattebo will be ready for action by the end of July.
Before his season was cut short by the injury, Skattebo impressed in eight games, recording 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 101 carries while adding 24 catches for 207 yards.
While Skattebo is yet to be fully healthy, what do you think of Harbaugh's stern message for his player? Share your thoughts.
