"Get the popcorn ready": J.J. McCarthy's Hostile Answer Hints at brewing conflict within Vikings, per Ex-QB

J.J. McCarthy's cryptic response to the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition has hinted at internal friction. While the stakeholders are at a precarious point, analysts are excited to see how this battle pans out.

“This looks like it's going to be a real quarterback battle, which we don't have very often,” former QB Chris Simms said. “And that's what's going to be exciting to see, with the team that we know is pretty d*** good, too. So, there's a lot here with your Vikings, and get the popcorn ready.”

Simms and sportswriter Mike Florio were discussing whether there is any ‘awkwardness’ within the Vikings QB room in the May 28 episode of NFL on NBC. Recently, J.J. McCarthy spoke with the press for the first time since the Vikings signed veteran QB Kyler Murray.

“The organization made a decision that they feel like is going to improve the depth and the quality of the room,” McCarthy said. “All I’m thinking about is continuing the upward trajectory that I set for myself last season.”

McCarthy has had one of the toughest transitions from college football to the pro league. The former Michigan Wolverines star led his program to an undefeated 15-0 season and the 2023 national championship.

However, the coveted draft prospect’s NFL career has suffered because of a series of injuries.

He underwent knee surgery in his rookie season and sat out the year entirely. Then in 2025, he sprained his ankle and sustained a concussion before adding a hairline fracture to the list. So far, McCarthy has passed for 1,632 yards, thrown 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

With a strained beginning like his, McCarthy has not proven to be a reliable starter. The Vikings then signed free agent Murray in March. This development was followed by reports that have widely deemed McCarthy to be a low-reward pick.

When asked if he had downplayed his personal feelings over the decision, the 23-year-old replied: “Then I would be disappointed if the rain fell.”

McCarthy has redirected his focus on improving himself and ‘controlling’ what he can. While this situation in the Vikings is widely viewed as yet another QB conflict, Murray has a different perspective.

Kyler Murray Shares His Honest Feelings On J.J. McCarthy

J.J. McCarthy’s replies over the quarterback situation in the Minnesota Vikings have left analysts speculating some tension in the QB room. While McCarthy has been curt with his replies, Kyler Murray has presented a different angle to their story.

“It’s been great. Obviously I know he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him,” he said, per Austin Daily Herald, on May 28. “Give him any knowledge that he needs. We’re both competitors, and I know we both want what’s best for the team.”

The 28-year-old was the first pick in 2019 and has played for the Arizona Cardinals since. He is entering his eighth season this year, but with the Vikings.

During practice, both QBs had their moments while splitting reps. They took turns with different groups during 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 drills and threw passes to many receivers. Which QB starts this season remains undecided.
