Frustrated Myles Garrett Gives Steelers Reality Check After Missing Out on NFL Sack Record
"So we playing to ruin their hopes of getting into the playoffs, and so that’s what we’re going in there to try to do," Browns' star Denzel Ward said ahead of their clash with Pittsburgh. Although that's exactly what they did, his teammate Myles Garrett wasn't pleased.
The Steelers lost 6-13 against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, surprising many. With that loss, the AFC North leaders' chances of making the playoffs took a hit, and Garrett, who missed out on setting the sacks record, explained why.
"They were more worried about keeping me away from Aaron than getting the win. That’s what came back to bite them," Myles Garrett said that the Steelers weren’t determined to win. And he was right, as the Steelers seemed laser-focused on the defensive end even before the game.
During a media availability session on Tuesday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked why his team had failed so many times against the Browns. He simply replied: “Myles Garrett.”
“He's a game wrecker,” added Tomlin, and he had good reason. In the fifteen games he’s played against the Steelers, Garrett has recorded 15 tackles, 13 sacks, and 1 fumble recovery.
Although the defensive end didn't like that he missed out on breaking the record of 22.5 sacks in a single season, he still has a chance.
Myles Garrett is still chasing the record
Michael Strahan set the most sacks recorded in a season with 22.5 sacks in 2001. Over 20 years later, Steelers’ T.J. Watt equalled that record but couldn't break it.
That's where Myales Garrett comes in. Despite the Browns having another dismal season, with their win against the Steelers being only their 4th of the season. However, the defensive end has racked up 22 sacks to his name and is only one sack away from breaking the current record.
While he wanted to get it against the Browns' longtime rivals, he couldn't, and now Myles Garrett just has one shot.
The Browns will face the Cincinnati Bengals in their final regular-season game. The Bengals already beat them 17-16 in Week 1, but Garrett will get the chance to set a new NFL record on January 3.
