FOX Super Bowl Record Under Threat as ESPN Declares 2026 Goals
ESPN is targeting a record-shattering broadcast for Super Bowl LXI in 2027. Following the 127 million viewers reached during the 2025 championship, the network revealed a multi-platform strategy to secure the most-watched telecast in American history.
Fox Sports basically has set a huge kind of industry benchmark in February 2025, when about 127.71 million viewers tuned in to see the Philadelphia Eagles take down the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22.
That telecast is still the most-watched Super Bowl and also the top-rated single-network broadcast that the United States has ever seen. NFL Live host Laura Rutledge was cited as the one who declared that goal publicly during Disney's 2026 upfront presentation.
“ESPN wants to deliver the most-watched Super Bowl in history when it broadcasts Super Bowl LXI on ABC and ESPN on February 14, 2027.” Front Office Sports shared the news on X.
This broadcast represents a major milestone for the network, as it will be the first exclusive Super Bowl aired under the 10-year NFL media rights agreement signed in 2021. To get the necessary 127.71 million viewers, ESPN is pushing a multi-platform approach, and it’s also kind of needed.
This includes a primary simulcast on ABC, plus a ManningCast on ESPN2 where Peyton and Eli Manning show up, and then there are the proposed alternate channels for the Pat McAfee Show and also an animated KidsCast.
Outside forces also kind of back ESPN up in its record-breaking intentions. Super Bowl LXI is set for the evening before Presidents’ Day, which is a federal holiday, and it usually lifts late-night audiences.
The game is planned to be hosted at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and the network is already coordinating big fan activations such as "ESPN Beach" at the Santa Monica Pier to help build momentum leading right up to kickoff, you know.
Now, even though the Super Bowl still feels like the big long-range target, the NFL has already locked in its 2026 Thanksgiving slate to maximize near-term regular-season viewership.
Bills vs Chiefs Headlining Thanksgiving 2026
For the first time, the league is putting in place a Thanksgiving Eve game, kind of like a new thing, featuring the Green Bay Packers at the Los Angeles Rams on Netflix.
The holiday itself starts with the Detroit Lions hosting the Chicago Bears on CBS, and then it moves on to the Dallas Cowboys, going up against the Philadelphia Eagles on Fox. The evening marquee matchup has the Buffalo Bills hosting the Kansas City Chiefs on NBC, you know, kind of the whole thing.
Unlike those previous reports that made it seem like a longer-term injury, Patrick Mahomes is presently healthy and expected to pilot the Chiefs' offense. His presence helps keep the nightcap as a top-tier television draw, at least for this week, anyway.
The full 2026 NFL schedule is set for release this Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on NFL Network and ESPN.
It'll drop with the complete picture of Kansas City's path to the postseason, and it also should sharpen the competitive landscape for the NFL's biggest broadcast windows—a real bit of context for viewers.
