Former Browns Lineman’s Vacation Turns Tragic as Pro Bowler Passes Away at 54

Another NFL player has said his goodbye to the world, and the football community once again stands in mourning.

Tre Johnson passed away on February 15, 2026, at age 54, while he was on a family vacation in Virginia. He was reportedly there to also support his son, who plays football for Hampton University.

At this time, the family or authorities have not released the specific official cause of death publicly. But his wife, Irene Johnson, did make a post on Facebook.

"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre' Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday February 15, 2026, during a brief family trip. His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock," Irene Johnson posted.

Johnson played a single season with the Browns and played three games. However, he spent the majority of his career with the Washington Commanders (then-Redskins).

The Washington Commanders paid homage to the late NFL player on X. "We're heartbroken to learn of the loss of former Washington All-Pro guard Tre' Johnson. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones," the Commanders posted. They drafted him as the 31st overall in 1994.

Tre Johnson’s Career in the NFL and Beyond

Johnson played in the NFL for 8 seasons as an offensive guard for the Washington Redskins (1994-2001) before joining the Cleveland Browns in 2001. He closed out his NFL career playing for Washington in 2002.

The former Browns player played 93 games (started 72) and made the Pro Bowl in 1999. In that season, he was recognized as an All-Pro, earning a spot on the Associated Press' second team. He also had a good career in college football at Temple University.

And once Tre Johnson retired from the NFL, he stepped foot into something he loved doing.

"After retirement, he also found his second career passion, education. He worked as a History Teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda Maryland, where he was beloved by the young male students he mentored and the faculty," Irene wrote.

Across his NFL career, he had built a reputation for durability and strength. The football community will definitely miss him. Rest in peace, Tre Johnson.
