"Flirted With It": Troy Aikman Questions Why People Are Interested in NFL Head Coach Roles
In his latest appearance on the show The Ticket, Troy Aikman discussed this season’s head coach market and why some players chose broadcasting jobs over coaching.
Pointing towards the Los Angeles Rams’ head coach, Sean McVay, Aikman said that certain people chose to remain in the NFL over working in the TV.
“Sean McVay, he flirted with it a few years ago after they had won their Super Bowl and he had given a lot of consideration to going into television."

After winning Super Bowl LVI, reports suggested Amazon Prime Video was preparing to offer a five-year, $100 million contract. As even McVay had said at the time, "Just the timing and everything that surrounded it, it’s very flattering. I’m humbled by it."
Naturally, it would be a tempting offer for coaches. Take Mike Tomlin for instance. There was some chatter that instead of going for another head coach job, Tomlin would join broadcasting.
“We’re seeing that from coaches, we’ve seen it from officials who have left the field to go into television. It’s a tough, tough job right now. I’ve often said, I’m not sure why anyone would want to go into coaching, people still are.”
During the season, Brian Callahan and Brian Daboll were both fired. With many more coaches parting ways with their team at the end of the season, perhaps there's some truth to what Aikman said.
Troy Aikman Is Now Helping the Miami Dolphins
The former Cowboys player was roped into the general manager and head coach hunt after the Dolphins fired Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel. Stephen Ross, the franchise chairman, was reported to be looking for “additional perspectives on the team's direction.”
Hence, Ross picked Aikman as his consultant for his experience as a Hall of Fame player and connections across the league. In his post-playing career, Aikman has shown interest in owning an NFL team rather than handling the pressure of coaching one.
