First NFL Trade in the Books as Titans Make Major Call on T'Vondre Sweat's Future

The 2026 NFL offseason is catching up in pace with the NFL combine this week and the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets registering the first trade of the season.

The Titans needed a good player at Edge, and they've partially addressed that need by trading defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat to the New York Jets in exchange for Edge Jermaine Johnson II.

Sweat was selected with the 38th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. He had 22 solo tackles, 29 assists, 1.0 sack, and 1 fumble recovery in 17 games in that rookie season.

The next season wasn't bad either.

But he injured his ankle in Week 1 of the 2025 season during the Titans’ loss to the Denver Broncos. Not only that, but then he re-injured the same ankle in practice before Week 3.

This forced the Titans to place him on Injured Reserve (IR) in September ue to which he missed a few games.

The Titans designated him to return to practice mid-October and officially activated him from IR on October 18, 2025. In the 2025 season, Sweat had 16 solo tackles, 18 assists, and 2.0 sacks in 12 games.

He wasn't that bad, but the Titans prioritized a better Edge over him.

Jermaine Johnson II was selected in the 1st round, 26th overall, of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He has 131 total tackles (80 solo, 51 assisted), 13 sacks, and 19 tackles for loss in his NFL career.

He is a good option for the Titans, but that is not the only change the Titans are planning.

Tennessee Titans Might Pursue John Franklin-Myers

Titans fans were already talking about how Franklin-Myers might fit with the team before the Sweat trade happened.

Franklin-Myers even interacted on social media about the possibility of reconnecting with former Jets coaches who are now part of Tennessee’s staff.

They have hired Tanzel Smart as an assistant DL coach. When the news came out last week, Franklin-Myers commented on his Instagram post saying, “You thinking what I’m thinking?” And what works for the Titans is that Franklin-Myers might soon be a free agent.

He signed a two-year contract extension in 2023 worth $15 million, which kept him under contract through the 2025 season.

Do you think it would be a good idea for the Tennessee Titans to bring him in? Let us know in the comments.
