Fired NBC Host Airs Disappointed Feelings as Fans Pay Respect

NFL fans won't be hearing the voice of Tony Dungy anymore when they tune into NBC Sports’ “Sunday Night Football” for the 2026 NFL season.

The former Super Bowl Winner took to X on Thursday to inform the fans about the firing.

"I have been informed by NBC that I won’t be back with FNIA this fall, and it has given me time to reflect and also to look ahead," he posted.

Dungy was sad, but he made sure to thank his NBC family for all the love and support he got through all these years. "I’ll have lasting memories of my time there, especially with Rodney Harrison, who has become a tremendous friend," he said.

The firing comes as no surprise. In February, The Athletic reported that several NBC studio analysts had their contracts expire following the 2025 season. Although the full list of those affected has not been confirmed, the network was expected to make changes to its studio lineup.

NBC hired Tony Dungy back in 2009 after he retired from coaching the same year, after the 2008 season with the Indianapolis Colts. He joined NBC Sports as an analyst on the pregame show Football Night in America. His debut? It came during the network’s coverage of Super Bowl XLIII.

"God has always directed me in these moments and while I’m not sure what the next step will be for me—whether it will be in football, in broadcasting, or getting more involved in church and community outreach —I know God has plans for my life and I can’t wait see them unfold", he wrote and quoted verse 8:28. from the Bible.

So his return to football as a coach or an analyst remains a mystery. The fans are sad. "You're the best, Coach! Godspeed to you in the next chapter of your story, and keep on inspiring and seeking Him in all you do," one said, and they were not the only ones.

NFL Fans Pay Respect to Tony Dungy

One said," I don’t know what FNIA is, but I know who Tony Dungy is. More Tony Dungy on any media would be a smart media choice." And once again, he wasn't the only one celebrating Dungy's career.

Another fan commented: "Thanks for all you've added to the game, Coach Dungy. I've enjoyed following your career as a coach and an analyst. Can't wait to see what you do next. Godspeed!" The NFL legend was nominated for a Sports Emmy after his very first season.

And he wasn't done. Dungy was nominated again in 2013. Of course, he had a fantastic career.

"17 years and they inform you by phone. tony dungy was one of the last voices on NFL television who actually talked about football instead of performing hot takes for engagement," a user said.

In January 2026, he finished his 17th season as an analyst on FNIA. In 2025, the program averaged 8.8 million viewers between 7:30 and 8:15 p.m. ET, the largest season audience in its history.

A comment also said, "What?! It won’t be the same without you on there. Very disappointed in NBC’s decision here." Many fans are disappointed.
