Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has been denied eligibility to continue with his football career by the NCAA. This happened after his formal confession of admitting to engaging in gambling on sports and also on his own team.

ESPN shared the news about the development on their official X handle.

"The NCAA has denied Texas Tech's appeal to reinstate quarterback Brendan Sorsby's eligibility, according to multiple reports," the news read.

The incident dates back to 2022 when Sorsby was redshirting with the Indiana Hoosiers. He was accused of placing at least 40 bets on Indiana football games. Though none were games he played in, NCAA rules strictly prohibit betting on one’s own team.

This pattern continued even after his move to Cincinnati, where Sorsby admitted to wagering nearly $90,000 in his college career. He placed bets on a myriad of different sports, including NBA, MLB, and PGA as well.

Thus, the NCAA labeled a permanent ineligibility status on his career. While Texas Tech argued about the harshness of the decision, the NCAA wouldn't budge.

The NCAA has already denied Sorsby's appeal, but the case isn't over yet. The quarterback is still fighting the decision in court, and a judge is expected to rule on his request for a temporary injunction by June 15, according to Yahoo Sports.

The fan feels that the decision was harsh. Sorsby was a standout player from Lake Dallas High School. His skills got him named 2021 Quarterback of the Year by the Denton Record-Chronicle.

He had a breakout year in 2024 and 2025, where he managed over 2800 yards and over 45 touchdowns.

"Sorsby is still a superstar talent and some franchise is about to get a massive Day 2 steal this July," said another

The fan feels that, despite this setback, Sorsby has the caliber to make it in the NFL. This also means that he could very well be drafted in the 2026 Supplemental Draft.

"They’ve done this once already. This feel like Chambliss all over again…. I wonder if Sorsby is going to fight this again or just go into the supplemental draft at the end of the month," one fan wrote.

The ongoing uncertainty around Sorsby's eligibility has reminded some fans of Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss' NCAA case, which also became a lengthy battle.

Athletes are prohibited from betting on any sport their league governs. For NCAA athletes, this means no betting on college or pro sports at all.

The fan seems satisfied with the way the NCAA handled this. The NCAA has been under fire for multiple reasons over the years.
