Ex-Teammate Robs Matthew Stafford of Super Dream as Rams Suffer Heartbreak
Four years after their last Super Bowl win, Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams nearly reached the big stage again. But they lost as Cooper Kupp, an ex-Rams WR, ended the game in the Seahawks' favor.
With 4:52 on the clock in the third quarter, Darnold threw a 13-yard pass to Kupp that turned into a touchdown. The score read 31-20, and while the Rams hit back with a touchdown of their own, the Seahawks chewed the clock out to end the game. But there was another reason the loss stung.
Before the Rams released him in the off-season earlier in 2025, he had formed a strong partnership with Stafford. The two started the 'Breakfast Club' in 2021, where they broke down films before games. It was a practice that run until the end of the 2024 season, when the Rams put him on the trade list despite Kupp wanting to stay.
Cut to 2025, and he has taken away Stafford's chance at taking the Lombardi. However, there's no sign of trouble between Kupp and Stafford. After the game, Stafford looked for his former teammate to congratulate him. Kupp recognized it and told Sports Central LA:
"Matthew’s the man. Ultimate competitor, one of the best to ever play the position. I love the guy, and every time he has the ball, it’s freaking terrifying."
And Stafford wasn't the only former teammate Cooper Kupp met. Kupp found star receiver Puka Nacua on the field as well, having been his mentor during his 8-year Rams stint.
From the Rams looking to trade him and then becoming a free agent, Cooper Kupp has come a long way, and he knows it.
That's Why Kupp is Grateful For His Seahawks Journey
Kupp has 593 passing yards and 2 touchdowns this season. And while those numbers may not sound like much, he couldn't help but appreciate the journey.
"This storyline, it couldn't have been written any better. Been a lot of times my wife and I have been struggling through [with] why things happened, why things played out the way they did. We were asking ‘why’ a lot... Just for it to play out like this, whether this was going to happen or not, the peace we have being here with these people, these guys, these coaches, it’s just been an unbelievable experience."
In two weeks, he will go up against the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on February 8th. Will he be able to complete his comeback story? Or will the Seahawks lose the Super Bowl? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
