The Cleveland Browns' quarterback controversy has dominated the team heading into the new season. After naming Deshaun Watson QB1 over Shedeur Sanders, fans have been left wondering why Cleveland made that decision.

Now, former NFL star Gerald McCoy believes he has the answer. According to McCoy, the Browns made the right choice for owner Jimmy Haslam, but not for the fans or the players.

“Did the Browns make the right QB decision? For Jimmy Haslam, yes. For the fans and the players, no. You have Shedeur Sanders sitting right here.”

McCoy believes the decision is particularly confusing given the direction the Browns appeared to be taking. Cleveland traded Myles Garrett and seemingly committed to building around a younger roster. Yet when the time came to give a young quarterback an opportunity, they chose the veteran instead.

That has only made the decision more difficult to understand. Watson now has the starting job, but the pressure will be immense from the moment he takes the field. If things don't go according to plan, Cleveland may quickly be forced to reconsider its decision.

Todd Monken believes Shedeur Sanders has a future with the Browns

Despite naming Watson QB1, Todd Monken hasn't given up on Sanders. The Browns head coach has repeatedly praised the rookie's development and believes he is progressing in the right direction.

Monken has been impressed by Sanders' diligence and willingness to ask questions. He also believes the quarterback has improved significantly in understanding the offense and working through his progressions.

The Browns are taking the long-term approach with Sanders. For now, he will have limited practice reps while Watson gets the majority of the work, but that could change quickly.

If Watson struggles, Sanders could eventually get his opportunity. The question is whether that opportunity arrives soon enough to save Cleveland's season.
