Ex-NFL Coach Loses $30 million Lawsuit Against Jacksonville Jaguars
Urban Meyer, the former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach, lost a $30 million lawsuit against his former team, which fired him in 2021.
“The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because both sides signed non-disclosure agreements preventing them from discussing the case publicly,” the Associated Press reported May 18.
According to AP, the case was settled in 2025, but On3 “first reported it on Monday."
Brett McMurphy, college football insider at On3, reported that Meyer, whose salary was estimated to be $9 million annually, challenged the Jaguars’ decision to fire him.
Neither the Jaguars nor Meyer has commented on the matter.
In December 2021, Jaguars owner Shad Khan fired Meyer “with cause” after Josh Lambo, then place kicker, said Meyer had kicked him.
“After deliberation over many weeks and a thorough analysis of the entirety of Urban’s tenure with our team, I am bitterly disappointed to arrive at the conclusion that an immediate change is imperative for everyone,” Khan said in a statement back then.
“I informed Urban of the change this evening. As I stated in October, regaining our trust and respect was essential. Regrettably, it did not happen.”
In its December 2021 report, AP wrote that Meyer is a successful college football coach who “failed miserably to make the transition to the NFL.”
Reports suggest that Meyer’s decision to stay behind with his family, instead of flying with the team for a late September game against the Cincinnati Bengals, was the last straw for Khan.
Because then a clip showed Meyer "behaving inappropriately with a woman" in Columbus, Ohio.
When Meyer, 61, was fired by Khan, he had coached for just 13 games, during which the team had won two. Meyer then challenged his firing.
Urban Meyer Involved In Two Lawsuits From His Time With The Jaguars
When the Jacksonville Jaguars hired Urban Meyer as their head coach in 2021, they reportedly offered him a five-year, $36 million contract. He was, however, fired before the season even finished.
As a result, Meyer “challenged the firing, sending the dispute to arbitration,” AP reported.
If he had won, the Jaguars would have had to pay Meyer what was remaining in the contract. However, the Jaguars won the lawsuit and saved over $30 million.
While the Jaguars can put this matter behind them, it is not the same for former place kicker Josh Lambo. He and Meyer are involved in a civil suit scheduled for trial in early August.
Lambo has filed for more than $3.5 million in salary and damages “for emotional distress caused by Meyer,” per AP.
According to the lawsuit filed in the 4th Judicial Circuit Court in Duval County, Lambo said that “Meyer created a hostile work environment” and as a result his “performance suffered.”
Lambo, however, dropped the Jaguars from the lawsuit earlier this year.
Meyer, who has three national titles, has been an analyst on the Big Noon Kickoff college football pregame show at Fox Sports and was inducted into the College Hall of Fame last December.
