ESPN Insider Claims Jimmy Haslam Overturned Andrew Berry's Decision to Hire Browns Head Coach
The Browns have finally found their head coach in Todd Monken. However, Tony Grossi said that the decision to drop Nate Scheelhaase may have highlighted a deeper divide.
In a video shared by ESPN Cleveland on January 28, Grossi hinted that the decision to hire Monken shows Haslam and GM Berry may not be on the same page.
"This indicates that Haslam was never comfortable with Scheelhaase. And he went against the recommendation of his search committee leader and GM," Grossi said.
Nate Scheelhaase first interviewed with the Browns on Jan 16, 2026, and then completed a second interview on Jan 26, 2026, as part of their head-coach search. Under his guidance, the Rams' passing offense led the NFL in 2025 with 4,557 passing yards (268.1 per game).
Sources have said Berry was in favor of him coming to the Browns since he could have fixed the Browns' passing game, which had the second-fewest passing yards this season (3,152)and the third-lowest passing touchdowns (16).
Rizzo also aired concerns over the Browns' future. "So you got to wonder about the future of Andrew Berry. They chose offense over defense, and they weren't comfortable with Scheelhaase. This is all on Haslam," he said.
But Jimmy Haslam and Andrew Berry Are Positive about Todd Monken
Despite the sources citing tensions between the two, both the Browns' owner and the general manager have praised Todd Monken.
Browns Managing and Principal Partners Dee and Jimmy Haslam expressed excitement in Todd's hiring. The two of them highly regard his sharp football IQ and creative offensive approach, crediting him with building strong, successful offenses at both the NFL and college levels for nearly two decades.
"He is an outstanding leader and has a clear vision to lead our team as a strong communicator who values trust with his players, but also accountability and preparation," the joint statement read.
Meanwhile, Andrew Berry said in a team statement that Monken’s varied and diverse background makes him a good fit for the team.
“The lessons he learned from John Harbaugh and Kirby Smart, as well as his demonstrated track record turning around Southern Miss, have shown us that he has a full understanding of what the position requires and the capacity to execute. We cannot wait to get started, and we welcome Todd, Terri, and Travis to Cleveland," said Berry.
However, only time will tell if Monken can finally help the Browns put together a winning season again.
