ESPN Analyst Urges Browns to Target New QB Despite Deshaun Watson's Performances
The Cleveland Browns have emerged as surprise contenders in the AFC North, sitting at 4-2 through six weeks. Their defense has been outstanding, helping them win games even when the offense hasn't consistently delivered. However, Deshaun Watson's performances remain a major talking point.
Watson has shown flashes of the quarterback Cleveland hoped it was acquiring, but consistency remains elusive. His struggles against the Jets, where he managed just 155 passing yards and took eight sacks, highlighted the limitations still holding the offense back.
Despite those issues, Cleveland continues to find ways to win. That has prompted ESPN analyst Ben Solak to suggest the Browns might be closer to genuine contention than many realise. In his assessment, the team already has the defensive foundation and offensive potential required to compete.
Solak believes improved quarterback play could unlock the Browns' full potential, arguing that Cleveland is only one major piece away from becoming a serious contender.
"The Browns are a quarterback away from contending," Solak wrote. He also pointed out that Cleveland's defense has helped the team win despite inconsistent offensive production.
The assessment raises a difficult question for Cleveland's front office. Should the Browns continue backing Watson and hope he finds consistency, or should they explore alternatives at quarterback? With the team sitting atop the division, the stakes are growing.
Browns Face a Crucial Decision About Deshaun Watson's Future
Cleveland's defensive strength gives it a platform to compete, but the offense must improve if the team wants to sustain its early success. Watson needs to deliver more consistent performances and avoid the mistakes that put unnecessary pressure on his teammates.
The Browns could explore quarterback options if those struggles continue, although replacing Watson would present financial and roster challenges. For now, Cleveland must decide whether its current quarterback can become the missing piece or whether another solution is necessary.
With the AFC North within reach, getting that decision right could define the Browns' season.
