Dolphins Shed Light on Troy Aikman's Responsibilities Amid Ongoing Controversy

Apr 8, 2026, 6:54 PM CUT

Troy Aikman's extended stay with the Miami Dolphins is raising questions across the NFL. Hired as a consultant, the ESPN analyst's new, vaguely defined role has now been addressed by the team's new head coach, Jeff Hafley.

On Tuesday, Hafley was asked, “How do you envision his role during the season with the team?”

To this, Hafley said that he has had good conversations with Aikman.

“I think right now Troy has been a good sounding board,” Hafley told reporters, via a transcript provided. “He’s a guy that I’ve talked to a few times. We’ve had some really good conversations, and I’ll continue to do that.”

While the statement did provide some insight into the role, it stayed fairly vague, not unlike Aikman's recent comments from last week's interview.

“I’ll continue to help in ways that are yet to be defined,” Aikman said in an interview with Clarence E. Hill of DLLS Sports.

Aikman, a commentator/analyst on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, was brought in by the Dolphins to look for their new head coach.

On 19 January, the Dolphins announced Hafley will replace Mike McDaniel as the franchise's 12th head coach. That should’ve relieved Aikman from his duties, but that has not been the case.

Now, with the analyst admitting to having "information" that other teams may not have, more and more questions are being asked about this development.

Is Aikman's New Role With the Miami Dolphins a Problem?

Questions are beginning to surface around Troy Aikman’s reported involvement with the Miami Dolphins, particularly in light of the league’s broader stance on competitive boundaries.

While no rules appear to have been broken, the situation has sparked discussion over how close is too close when prominent broadcasters maintain ties with active franchises.

The development has also led to a wider conversation across the league, with some wondering whether similar relationships could become more common going forward.

As teams continue to search for every possible edge, Aikman’s situation has, at the very least, highlighted an evolving gray area between media access and team-level insight that the NFL may eventually need to address.

The Dolphins need to define Aikman’s role so the NFL can ensure he does not jeopardize other teams and limit his access to them. This may now be necessary after reports emerged that Aikman candidly made a statement.

“I have information that they don’t have or can’t get,” he said as per Pro Football Talk.

There have also been other examples of this. Tom Brady is an analyst for Fox Sports and a partial owner of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Aikman was a career Dallas Cowboys quarterback who played for 12 seasons between 1989 and 2000. Still, the Cowboys never consulted him, Aikman revealed, as per The Landry Hat.
