Diego Pavia won't be with the Baltimore Ravens when training camp opens. Baltimore waived the undrafted rookie quarterback on Thursday, July 23, to make room for veteran center Ethan Pocic.

Baltimore signed Pavia after the 2026 NFL Draft with a chance to compete for the No. 3 quarterback role. That opportunity ended before camp, and the former Vanderbilt quarterback is back on the market.

The Ravens officially announced the release of Pavia on July 23 on X. The move came as part of the roster move that cleared space for Pocic on the 90-man roster. 

After the Ravens' confirmation on X, Baltimore now has four quarterbacks under contract: Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley, Skylar Thompson and fellow undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano.

As per the report by Ryan Mink of the Baltimore Ravens, Jackson remains the starter, and Tyler Huntley is back as the backup. Thompson and Fagnano also stay in the mix fighting for the No. 3 spot.

Pavia finished second in the 2025 Heisman Trophy voting. He still went undrafted, becoming the first Heisman Trophy finalist to undergo this fate since 2014 when Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch underwent the same fate. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Ravens originally expected to bring him in for rookie minicamp before deciding to sign him to a three-year deal after the draft.

Size was one of the biggest concerns about Pavia during the draft process. He measured just under 5-foot-10 at the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine. His measurement has often raised questions about how his game would translate to the NFL.

That didn't stop him from producing at Vanderbilt. In his final season, he completed 70.6% of his passes for 3,539 yards, 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

He also ran for 862 yards and 10 scores while helping the Commodores to their first 10-win season with a 10-3 record.

Although his time in Baltimore was brief, Pavia will now look for another opportunity elsewhere. With training camps beginning around the league, another team could still bring him in to compete for a developmental quarterback role.

Analyst identifies possible landing spots for Diego Pavia

Following the Ravens' decision, USA Today's Nick Brinkerhoff highlighted a pair of teams that could make sense if Pavia gets another chance before the season begins.

The Carolina Panthers were among the teams mentioned. Brinkerhoff noted that while Carolina already has Bryce Young, Kenny Pickett and Haynes King on the roster, Pavia could provide another developmental option.

The Detroit Lions also emerged as a possible fit. Behind starter Jared Goff, Detroit currently has Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Luke Altmyer, giving Pavia another potential path to compete for a roster spot.

Whether either team shows interest remains to be seen. For now, Pavia's NFL journey has hit an unexpected setback, but with preseason roster moves still ahead, the former Vanderbilt quarterback could receive another opportunity to continue his professional career.
