"Didn't Unretire for That": Philip Rivers Reportedly Rips Into Teammates After Colts Defeat to 49ers
Philip Rivers became the oldest active player in the NFL season after the Colts activated him for the game against the Seattle Seahawks. But despite the start, he wasn't happy with the team.
Richard Johnson, an NFL insider, reported that Rivers was furious at the team's performance, especially the defense, and he unloaded on them in the locker room.
"Colts QB Philip Rivers was reportedly screaming at the team’s defense in the locker room after the game. He was overheard saying 'I didn’t un-retire for that s***!'
After Colts' QB1, Daniel Jones, suffered a season-ending injury, the team looked at thier veteran, Rivers, who had not played a game since 2020. He had retired following the 2020 NFL season, but then came out of it this season.
The first game went close, with the Colts recording a 16-18 loss and Rivers ending with a passer rating of 73.1 with 120 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. He bettered the performance with 23/35 for 277 yards and 2 TDs against the 49ers, but had a humiliating 27-48 loss.
It was the worst performance from the Colts' defense all season and one of the worst defensive performances we have seen in the NFL this year. The 49ers gained 440 yards of total offense, there was no consistent pressure on Brock Prudy, and the defense made him look like prime Joe Montana.
Head coach Shane Steichen added, "Got to be better. Bottom line, we can't give up that many yards. They scored a lot of points, went up and down the field." Even one player felt bad for Rivers
And this comes off the back of a poor defensive performance
DeForest Buckner has had 4 solo tackles and 1 assist against the 49ers, which was not a great performance from the veteran. He was not shy of accepting it.
"We couldn't stop a nosebleed today," the veteran DT said, and he also felt bad for Rivers.
"I feel bad because we let him down… He's balling, putting up points, and it's our job to make sure the other team doesn't score. And we didn't show up today," he said.
