“Did not know he existed”: NFL fans’ blunt reaction to ex-Cowboys QB retiring at 31
Quarterback Will Grier, who represented the Carolina Panthers, has retired from the NFL. He had played just two games in the NFL and decided to bid adieu to the game at 31.
Grier made his announcement on his social media on Wednesday. The Carolina Panthers also put out a news story about his decision. As per NFL insider Adam Schefter's Instagram post, the Panthers have officially put him on the retired list.
"Carolina Panthers placed 31-year-old veteran quarterback Will Grier on the reserved/retired list today. Grier spent seven NFL seasons with the Panthers, Cowboys, Bengals, Patriots, Chargers and Eagles," wrote Schefter on his Insta handle.

Schefter made a big post on Insta, but Grier simply put it in two words to let the world know his decision: "Retired today."
He had signed a deal with the Panthers in April and reportedly received a coaching opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys.
The chance to transition into coaching offered him a new path in football while allowing him to remain involved in the game. However, he has now chosen to move away from the sport.
Originally selected by the Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Grier spent several seasons moving between practice squads and active rosters.
Despite earning opportunities with multiple franchises, he struggled to secure a long-term starting role in the league. Grier's decision came to light just a week before the Panthers were about to start their training camp.
He also shared messages of support on his Instagram Stories. It featured the likes of Kenny Pickett, Dak Prescott and Jake Ferguson.
Grier's retirement announcement on social media got the NFL fans talking, and they had some words for Grier.
NFL fans troll Will Grier over his retirement
Will Grier wasn't technically a well-known name in the sport, courtesy of his limited appearances, and fans were quick to remind him of that.
"I did not know he existed," wrote a fan sarcastically.
Grier was a college star in West Virginia. However, that performance never translated to the NFL.
He could only play in two NFL regular-season games. That was also in his rookie year in 2019 with the Carolina Panthers. Since then, across seven seasons and six teams, he never appeared in another regular‑season game.
"I remember when he was on West Virginia when they were scoring 60+ points a game," wrote another fan.
He attended SouthLake Christian Academy in Huntersville and then moved to Davidson Day School, where he broke records. That also included a North Carolina-record 77 TDs.
For West Virginia, he had over 7,000 yards and over 70 TDs. His accomplishments even made him Parade Magazine’s National Player of the Year, as per the Charlotte Observer.
Yet the NFL proved to be a different ballgame for him.
"Bro played for the Patriots? lol," came another scathing remark
Unfortunately for Grier, he could not become a mainstay. He joined a quarterback room that included Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. Opportunities just kept on eluding him.
"Why reserved/retired? Just retire, ain’t nobody picking your sorry a** up anyway," wrote another fan.
Will Grier never got the opportunity that he had waited for. He merely stayed on in the league, filling in on the practice squad. With a "doctorate" degree in football, Grier has expressed interest in coaching when his career ends. Maybe that will be his next step.
