Deion Sanders sends positive message amid son Shedeur Sanders’ recent struggles
As Shedeur Sanders faces mounting pressure in the Cleveland Browns' quarterback competition, his father, Deion Sanders, shared an uplifting message on social media that emphasized gratitude and staying positive.
“Smile, Laugh, Joke & be Happy! You're here, therefore u made it to witness today, which is a tremendous gift from God! Take this Present and enjoy it, appreciate it & try your best to make someone feel as good as u feel. Life is better when it's shared. #COACHPRIME,” wrote Deion Sanders on his X handle.
While Deion didn't mention Shedeur by name, the timing of the message comes as his son faces increased scrutiny ahead of the Browns' quarterback decision.
The message comes as many analysts expect Deshaun Watson to open the season as Cleveland's starting quarterback.
During OTAs and minicamp, Watson led the way, completing 90 of 133 passes with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions in team drills.
Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders finished 79 of 113 with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Despite the early practice numbers, not everyone believes Watson has the upper hand.
Cleveland.com NFL insider Mary Kay Cabot, however, believes that Sanders has made serious inroads in the quarterback battle and is significantly more accurate than Watson.
“Shedeur has the edge in a couple of things, but the No. 1 of those things is his accuracy. I mean, when he has time to throw, he can fit it into a tight window and put it right on the money,” Cabot said on the Orange and Browns podcast.
While Sanders has his accuracy, Watson brings something that simply cannot be replicated: natural athleticism. When healthy, he can escape pressure, extend broken plays, and punish defenses with his legs.
“When you’re talking about athleticism, Deshaun Watson is the superior athlete from an athleticism standpoint,” Cabot said plainly.
While the Browns' top management has yet to provide a clear answer on the starting quarterback, Sanders recently admitted that he isn't satisfied with merely being part of the team.
Shedeur Sanders remains confident despite Browns quarterback battle
Last season was a humbling experience for Shedeur Sanders. Not only did the Cleveland Browns' offense struggle, but the rookie also endured a so-so campaign despite an outstanding college career.
Even with uncertainty surrounding the starting job, Sanders said his ambitions extend far beyond simply earning a roster spot.
“I’m not content just being on no team,” Sanders claimed in his latest YouTube video (@shedeursanders2). “I’m trying to be one of the greatest. You’ve got to be thankful, but know there’s still more. There’s still more.”
Last year, Sanders made seven starts, completing 120 of his 212 passes for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns. However, what dragged him down were his 10 interceptions. His 18.8 QBR was the worst by any Browns starter in franchise history.
Sanders enters training camp facing an uphill battle for Cleveland's starting job, but both his own comments and Deion's message reflect a focus on staying confident as the competition continues.
