Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has shown support for former NFL running back Chris Johnson. The support came after Johnson revealed he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Johnson shared the news during an appearance on Good Morning America, which aired on June 29 and helped relaunch the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for the disease. In a video posted on Instagram on July 5, Sanders explained why he believes reviving the challenge can have a meaningful impact beyond social media.

"I know God uses foolish things to confound the wise,” Sanders said in the video.

He was among the latest high-profile figures to take part in the campaign. Sanders said the challenge could unite people while supporting Johnson through his fight.

"If we use something foolish like [the Ice Bucket Challenge], because CJ is going to come through—I know he's going to come through; he's going to win this battle—it will bring so many of us together,” he continued.

Earlier this week, LenDale White nominated Sanders to join the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of Johnson.

Coach Prime can feel what Johnson is going through as he missed much of Colorado's 2025 offseason battling bladder cancer. Eventually, the process resulted in the removal of his bladder after doctors discovered a tumor within it.

Sanders has faced his own health challenges in recent years. That gave extra weight to his decision to back Johnson publicly.

Former NFL players have also joined the renewed Ice Bucket Challenge. Their participation has brought fresh attention to ALS and the push for more research.

On July 2, Johnson, while fighting the battle, took up a bigger cause, challenging his friends to take up the Ice Bucket Challenge.

"Let’s bring back the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Grab a bucket, challenge 3 people, and if you can, donate to help fund ALS research," he posted on Instagram.

He challenged White, former NFL cornerback Adam Jones, and former running back Marshawn Lynch. Beyond the nominated ones, Sanders joined in along with former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who nominated fellow NFL greats LaDainian Tomlinson, Emmitt Smith, Ricky Williams, and Eric Dickerson to continue spreading awareness.

One of the NFL's most explosive running backs during his career, Johnson continues to receive widespread support from across the league as players, coaches, and fans look to support the initiative.
