Deion Sanders Makes Final Decision On NFL Coaching Amidst Recent Todd Monken Statement
As the Cleveland Browns are battling a handful of problems, Deion Sanders has cleared the air after his recent statements added another one to their list.
Sanders reiterated the stance he has long held: he is not looking to coach any NFL franchise.
“I never wanted their job,” the Colorado Buffs head coach said, according to the Irish Star on May 17. “I love Colorado, man. I love my kids that I have in that locker room. I love the staff. I love all of it. I ain't trying to coach in no NFL.”
Sanders made this statement after his previous comment on the Browns’ new head coach, Todd Monken, raised eyebrows.
On May 14, during his appearance on The Barbershop podcast hosted by Garrett Bush, Coach Prime shared his plans to meet and talk with Monken in Cleveland.
“I was supposed to go, actually, next week, but I’ve got to shoot a commercial, to Cleveland to meet [Monken],” he revealed. “...Because I think it’s vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur], how to get him going. That wasn’t asked of me a year ago. I don’t understand it.”
Sanders’ idea of chatting with Monken rubbed critics the wrong way, given another comment he had made. In January 2025, he said that the only way he would consider coaching in the NFL “is to coach my sons.”
In 2025, both his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, had declared for the NFL. While Shilo, the other older one, went undrafted, Shedeur was projected as a round one pick but faced a massive draft slide and was picked in the fifth round.
That marked the beginning of an upward battle for Shedeur. While Deion wants the best for his son, an insider suggested that Monken will do a fair job.
NFL Insider Reveals Todd Monken’s Approach To Pick Browns’ QB1
The Cleveland Browns are gearing up for their second season with quarterback Shedeur Sanders and their first with new head coach Todd Monken.
Monken has the Herculean task of picking the Browns’ starting quarterback, and Albert Breer believes he will do it justly.
“There’s going to be a lot of noise around the Browns quarterback situation, but I do believe head coach Todd Monken is going to be fair about it,” he wrote on May 17. “What does that mean? To me, it means no one’s getting anointed. The best man will win.”
Sanders’ rookie season ended with 1,440 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. While his performance didn’t paint Sanders as the Browns’ starting quarterback, the franchise has four options to choose from.
Sanders, fellow 2025 pick Dillon Gabriel, veteran Deshaun Watson, and 2026 pick Taylen Green. While Deion Sanders wants to see his son shine, picking the best starter is Monken’s call to make.
