Deion Sanders Bashed By NFL Fans Over Latest Todd Monken Statement
While Shedeur Sanders' NFL rookie year didn't begin on the brightest note, it still ended with a Pro Bowl nod. But for his father, Deion Sanders, there's still groundwork to be laid. Coach Prime wants to talk to the new head coach at Cleveland, but the fans are seeing right through it.
On May 14, the Colorado coach said on Garrett Bush’s podcast that a meeting with Todd Monken has not been scheduled. Still, the father plans to travel to Cleveland and sit down to discuss how to get the best out of Shedeur Sanders as a player.
"I want to meet him. Because I think it’s vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur], how to get him going," Coach Prime revealed on Bush's YouTube channel. "That wasn’t asked of me a year ago. I don’t understand it."
For Deion Sanders, the 2025 NFL Draft began with disappointment after Shedeur Sanders slid all the way to the fifth round. Even after finally hearing his name called, the wait continued. Finally, Shedeur made his first NFL start in November.
Once he eventually got opportunities on the field, Shedeur Sanders still flashed promise by throwing for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns across eight appearances. However, the 10 interceptions quickly became the biggest concern surrounding his rookie campaign.
Those numbers also felt modest compared to Sanders’ explosive two-year run at Colorado under Coach Prime, where he piled up over 7,000 passing yards and 64 touchdowns while emerging as one of college football’s biggest stars.
Now, as a result, the coach wants to discuss his son with Todd Monken at the Cleveland Browns. Though Deion has clarified that the discussion will be as a coach, some fans still feel that the situation is unfair.
Fans Make Their Feelings Known Over the Proposed Meeting
For many fans, the very fact that Deion Sanders could get a meeting with Monken, unlike other dads, stood out.
"Why? Do all the Browns employees dads get one on ones with the HC? Shedeur is an adult now yes?" one fan bluntly stated.
There were also a few who took a jab at the coach vs coach idea by highlighting Deion's coaching record.
"Deion can’t coach. He got lucky with Travis Hunter and hasn’t won since he left," another user said.
A few also doubled down on the coach criticism by mentioning some of the players Deion received.
"Deion isn’t a coach," a third comment read. "He stands on the sidelines with his headset mic turned up for the whole game. His coordinators are coaching the team. He’s there for pep talks and Aflac commercials."
Some said the words may have been taken out of context, given that there was more to the interview.
"Yall are weird, go listen to the full interview," one fan pointed out.
Some even drew analogies from high school dynamics to comment on the situation.
"We're back in high school and daddy wants to talk to coach. If I am Cleveland, I don't pick up the phone," a user said about the situtation.
Whether fans agree with it or not, Deion Sanders has made it clear he still wants to play a role in Shedeur Sanders’ NFL development moving forward.
But as the young quarterback enters a crucial second season in Cleveland, the spotlight around both father and son is clearly not fading anytime soon.
