Dak Prescott Sends Clear Warning to Jerry Jones Over George Pickens’ $20M Deal
The Dallas Cowboys’ star wide receiver George Pickens has had a career-best season. Perhaps that’s why QB Dak Prescott thinks that the 24-year-old must stay in Dallas.
According to Dallas Cowboys columnist Tommy Yarish, Prescott has been insistent about Pickens’ contract extension and keeping him in Dallas.
"I think it's vital. think it must be done," Prescott said. "I think obviously from Jerry to everybody down understands that, and one the impact on this offense and the team and the great player that he is, we've got to find a way to keep him here."
Picken’s impact mirrored the Cowboys’ standing as second in terms of receiving yardage per game (266.3). In 17 games, he has scored 9 touchdowns for 1429 receiving yards. Prescott felt that the 24-year-old made the team’s offense better, and it should be a no-brainer to keep him.
Owner Jerry Jones has made it clear that he wants to keep Pickens. While speaking on 105.3 The Fan, he said, “No, I do not. We’ve got 2 number one receivers, and that’s just exceptional right at the time our quarterback has probably been the best he has ever been.”
However, things are more complex than they seem.
The Downside of Dallas Keeping George Pickens
George Pickens isn't the only top wide reciever in the Cowboys' team.
As the owner, Jerry Jones said, they were already paying huge money to Ceedee Lamb. It wasn't an ideal approach to have a huge chunk of the salary cap taken by two offensive players while their defense struggles.
Dallas was the third-worst defensive unit, with 377 yards per game allowed to the opposition teams. Moreover, there have been severe moments when Pickens has lost his cool, which has indirectly cost the Cowboys.
His meltdown in Week 3's loss against the Bears was a pivotal moment in Dallas' season, as they failed to qualify for the playoffs. Considering his "problem child" persona, it might not be the smartest idea to extend his contract.
With rumors of Pickens getting traded, it will be interesting to see what the Dallas fans have to say about that. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
